Yep, that's the pic I used to look up the part numbers, then checked the prices with
pelicanparts.

Interesting. I guess BMW thought this was "good enough" for OEM.

Too many mods to list, PM me if the cat needs killing...

oil pressure indicator light turns on

Things which will certainly effect the pump life are:-
-Age/mileage of the engine
-Oil quality & cleanliness
-operational rpm of engine (increased rpm probably increasing likelihood of failure)
-quality control of the casting from which the lobed drive is made from. ie porosity or poor control over the pearlitic steel particle size etc.
We have seen a couple of people question whether a lightweight crank pulley may effect the life of the pulley. The car we have in had had a stock pulley for 55,000miles and an alloy crank pulley on for one week .
We wanted to be 100% sure that our pulley (or Altas or whoevers ) had no influence on wear rate of the oil pump. In the above case its very unlikely as even if the wear rate was a thousand times faster than normal ,it would still last a few thousand miles not one week.
To be totally sure Ive just taken mine off our GTT300T car today and stripped it for detailed inspection......see photos. This has had our Crank pulley on for over 30,000miles and is 100% perfect as you can see.(Im very glad to say). I wouldnt go as far as to say our Alloy crank pulley preserves oil pump life but it certainly doesnt reduce it either.
Our car never gets rev'ed above 7000rpm, as we dont recommended raised rev limits generally.
It has had decent fully syn oil all its life which may help.
Oil Pumps, I would now recommend if you want total peace of mind that pumps are changed every 50000 miles particularly if rev limit increaed or even reved regularly to the stock limit. Also use fully syn oil only. The level of modification (power) of the cars I think would have only very little (if any ) on pump life. It is mileage, high rpm, oil cleanliness & quality that effect the pump life mostly IMO.
To put everthing into perspective this is the first oil pump failure I personally know of in the UK. So dont lose sleep guys.

Hi Roland, I need your kind advise. I have a R53 05 MCS. Mods fitted are Alta 17 percent pulley, Alta lightened Crank pully (0 percent reduction) and Alta CAI.

A week ago, while i was driving ( at 4000 rpm). A knocking noise came from the engine. Subsequently, the oil pressure indicator came on. I restart the engine after coolling it down , the knocking noise returned. It really loud and the oil pressure indicator light is back on.

The car was towed back to the agent. My car mileage is at 46 k, but my warrantly expires by a few working days. Therefore, the agent is not going to cover my ride. (they also highlighted that warranty do not cover aftermarket parts and fault can be cause by the mods.)

From your opinons, what do you think is the likely fault of it. My engine is still able to run except for the loud cranking sound. The last thing i want to do is an engine replacement.

I do service my car every 5k and use OWS performance engine oil.

Best Regards..

Pictures of my oil pump rotors after 58k miles on a JCW car. 30k miles with a +3% crank pulley, plenty of track days and a bit of drag racing.

I'm neither a mechanic, nor an engineer, but they look fine to me. If you look in the pictures you will see the sides are slightly worn, but the flats look okay to me.

As the engine was out and bits were being renewed in that area, I thought it wise to change the oil pump when the parts only cost a few quid.

I was looking for my answer and I googled it and found it in Mini2. I am going to change my cylinder head soon and pistons with big valve head. Also I have to change the PROFILE-GASKET of the oil pump cover because it sealing from there. So is it better to change the oil pump too? What exactly oil pump parts are?

Thanks
