Anyone used BMWorks in Wong Tai Sin?

I'm thinking of taking my MCS there for the first oil service when I reach 2000KM.
BMWorks charge $70 for factory oil filter, and $100 for the labour. Seems quite reasonable, but have not checked elsewhere.

Which brand and weight of oil do you guys recommend. The factory uses 5W-30, but which brand - probably Castrol......correct?

Cheers...........Simon

Simon,

The price seems OK because the dealer charged me $91 for the filter, $30 for the screw plug and $280 for labour. BTW, the filter costs $61 now. With respect to oil grade, the dealer recommended 0W40 Golden Mobil 1 when I took my babe back for oil change in last September. But I think this oil grade is more than enough.

Though I don't have oil change in BMWorks, I think BMWorks is still better than ordinary workshops by the street. At least they know Mini and the little trick to play with the stupid oil filter.

Regards,
Manho

Thanks Manho............I'll give BMworks a try.
$30 for the screw plug?? Why do you need a new one? Do you mean the washer for the drain plug screw?

Cheers........Simon

Simon,

That's right, its the drain plug screw. The dealer said that the thread of the screw would be damaged once you turned it. So you have to pay fot it. Believe it or not? BTW, the dealer charged me $600 for 4 liter of golden Mobil 1 0W40 engine oil. So expensive!

Come and join us on 13 April. It could be informative and you could get whatever information you want.

Alan,

How is the repair work of your Mini? Is it good?

My bill for the oil change is as follows:

Labour: $280
Oil: $600
Plug: $ 30
Filter: $ 91

What about yours?

Manho,

The repair to my front bumper was done last week too. It cost $2500 by BMW and the careless driver is paying for it. That wasn't a new replacement of the bumper, it was only a respray and replacement of the LH indicator light cover only. Expensive!

The oil change was very expensive, I think it cost over $700 for the oil and $5xx for the labour, no charges for the crew plu, but a charges for the air con filter???? Anyway, it costed me with $1500!

I have done 2300 KM and the car doesn't feel very much of difference after the oil change.

Alan,

What kind of oil do you have? Quite expensive! What happened to your aircon filter? If shall be under factory warranty. You don't have to pay for it.

In the next oil change, buy your own oil in gas station. Golden Mobil 1 only costs $550.

Manho,

I think I would try BMWorks next time for any unscheduled oil change. By the way, I had some long driving in the weekend, and I have to say the car did actually feeling better after the oil change, I didn¡¦t feel that last week was probably because I didn¡¦t push it hard enough.

Simon,

I recommend you to try Selinna. Personally I find it better than MOBIL ONE, especially the one used by BMW.
My Oil Change History is as follows:
0 - 3000km Stock oil

3000 - 7000km Mobil One replaced in BMW. great difference for the first few hunderd or up to 1,500.

7000 km - 10000km Selinna 10w-60. Much better, the engine is smoother than before. It supposes last more than 5,000km.

10000km to now Mobil One replaced in BMW. Why change oil? Because it is the end of my warranty and I got a free change of oil. Mobil One's impression is good for the one few hundreds. Some technican told me Mobil One is good for the first 3,000km only Mobil One got dirty (yellow) quickly.

By the way, I think MCS should use a better one as the engine should be much hotter than MC.

Thanks for the tip Wyne.

I have bought the oil already - Castrol 0W-40.
Will 10W-60 be too thick? I thought 10W-60 was for turbo cars only...........am I wrong?

Thanks anyway.......Simon

Simon,

I used to be think like you until one technican told me another story. (Say 10W-60) The first degree is the protection on 0 degree C and the second degree is the protection on high temperature. No one has said high degree must equal to thick.

This degree is just a measure/standard. Lot of brands have 0w-40 oil (half synthetic or full synthetic), but they are all different. Not because of the degree, as they are all the same, but the materials inside.

So, cheap oil might have the "high degree equal to thick" problem. However, it should not be problem of good engine oil.

One point I have not mentioned. BMW HK uses MOBIL ONE. Porsche use Selinna (someone tells me this. I could not verify this since I dont have a Porsche) If ture, this could tell the difference.

Try it yourself and you could feel the difference, if any.

Hi Wayne,

Really? I always thought the first number before the 'W' is the 'winter' number.......ie: the viscosity of the oil when cold. The last number is the viscosity of the oil when hot. The larger the number - the thicker the oil.......correct??
I realise that modern synthetic oils have many additives to help it protect the engine longer.......and in general, thicker oils will protect better.
Anybody else here using 10W-60 oil in their MC or MCS??
Comments pls.

Cheers............Simon
