Engine stalled with low rev

I was driving 2nd gear in the harbour tunnel. Traffic was slow and I applied brake, the rev dropped pretty low then the engine was stalled. I have experienced with low rev when applying brake in slow traffic before but never stall the engine. Anyone experienced with this problem before?

I experience the same in central tunnel, so next time, when you feel the rpm drops, shift to neutral, and floor the gas petal, it should then be better.

I took mine back to BMW, and they said they dont see such problem on their test drive (ie = they dont even know what's going on), they only re-programme my computer to a higher rpm level.

i think this is the common CVT MC problem

YES, if ur car is CVT then this is a very common problem.

Windy's idea seems like a good 1 though.

Buy I know that Alan's MC is a manual one. Does the same remedy work?

knocking the stick in to neutral in any car will obviously relieve stress on the engine, hence less likely to stall in any situation. yet the Mini seems more prone to stalling than most other cars, we may find in the near future that it's something to do with ECU? just a guess??? I have noticed that in HK though that most people(mainly on auto) have a habit of knocking the car in to neutral when approaching red traffic lights etc anyway, this is one of the times ivguess this is most likely to happen. I personally see this as a bad habit anyway and feel you shouldn't have to do it! The only other thing that could make me think that it would be very commom in HK is A/C, for the majority of the time it's on and creates an extra load on the engine! maybe when winter comes back you may find this happens less, plus then engine will be able to run a little cooler aswell. The bottom line is this, it shouldn't happen.

Alan, MrDurst is right. Last year on a very hot day, I have the A/C on and have been driving cross the harbour and then the stall problem happened. It's only once and didn't come back again. Anyway, I plan to have my CVT upgraded to CD33 later on when I have time after the move. The idle rev should be up a bit and avoid the problem. Not sure how to deal with it in manual though.

Thanks guys. Mine is a manual MC and I was having A/C on last night when the car was stalled. First, I thought would it be something to do with my new exhaust, may be too back flow going out and not enough air coming into the engine (just guessing)? Anyway. will try to take the car back to BMW and see what they would do about it.

Arrow av a luk at dis

I saw this in the general part of the forum, thought some of you might like a look if you haven't already. I haven't read it all myself, but thought their might be more remedy clues HERE.

Thanks MrDurst.

Drove the car this morning and found nothing wrong with it. Even with cold start and A/C on, accelerated the car then slammed on brake and clutch, the rev kept just below 1K, no engine stall. Anyway, booked in with BMW to check it out and will post and update.

wongakh, which A/C do you have?
You see it could be a combination of things, for example......

You have the air con on full(or if it's auto A/C the control unit determins that, meaning you have less control of this). Then when you enter the tunnel, the car isn't getting enough air flow and turns on the cooling fan. This along with the other electronics on in the car is enough to catch out the slow responding ECU and then puts too much strain on the engine before it's had chance to build the revs to cope.

Hopefully the BMW garage should be able sort it for you!

Took the car to the new Mini Center last week for the low rev problem. The advisor said they have loaded the new software to my car and also believed the problem may be caused by my aftermarket spark plugs which weren't tighten in enough.

The car seems to have a more stable rev when the car is idle (before it was sort of jumping a bit). The low rev problem occurred once just after I switched on the A/C when I stopped in the traffic light last night.

The new Mini Center took the record of all my after market stuffs. They didn't say much about it only saying that my supersprint exhaust may be too much for the mini! Anyway, I think the guy at the new mini center center is more friendly and approachable than those in the BMW.
