lurching/surging

Hi All

Just wonder any of us HongKong owners had experienced the lurching/surging problem in MC CVT and MCS that I read so much about in other forums.

My CVT did stalled once on a hill start during the first couple of days after I got the car and I did experience a couple of "power loss" below 2000rpm in the first week as well. But they seem to be all gone now with nothing done to it. I do still have the "downhill" engine breaking effect though

Wonder these lurching/surging problems apply to HK cars or not... It seems to be much less talked about here than the rest of the world. saw that ar75 has to have his gearbox changed but didnt see anyone talking about software upgrade that other owners are doing in the States and UK.

On the similiar subject, a rep from BMW called last week and asked whether my car was fine. I asked whether there is a recall and she said no, just a courtesy call. Judging from my after-sales/pre-delivery service from the sales person, I dont believe that this is a courtesy call at all...

my MCS is in for service and i got a loan MC CVT.

and yes, i hv a lot of surging.

I think is more due to the CVT more than anything ccos my S does not hv the problem..

my friend was surprised how bad the CVT was. since it was not smooth at all.
the engine nearly stalled one time, but i put on the gas immediately.

i think the CVT is being too smart for its own good. the down shifts are good, but sometimes it tries too eagerly to dwon shifts and its difficult to get a smooth stop at the lights.

Oh, i miss my S so much.....
no offense, but after drivng the CVT, I now fully appreciate my standard, unmodded S.

i have a CVT here in the states. it used to have that lurching/surging problem at low speed, but it's cured with the 33.1 software upgrade it's running smooth as silk now. ask your dealer in hk about it.

It seems to me that the stalling problem happens more when your car is relatively new, and especially when the weather is hot and you have your air-conditioning on for a while. I had that problem a few times when I got my car last year and it was doing only 2000km or so. This year so far I don't have that problem anymore.
And for that surging problem, yes, I still have it occasionally, especially when the car is cold. But with the mods (air filter, spark plugs and spark plug cables), it is now to an acceptable level. I haven't done the software upgrade, but that's another long story...
Don't suspect the courtesy call, it's their routine procedure to call you a few weeks after you got your car.
As for that braking effect, actually I enjoy it as I found it quite helpful in going downhill.
Have you tried the +/- shift? Do that after you pass the break-in period. Rev. the car up to 5500rpm before shifting! It's a different animal when you try it! But don't compare to an S. They are just different.

Mine is a manual MC and I have experienced with low rev and near stall problem during stopping of car. After I took it for service (with the new sw upgraded) few weeks ago, the problem is still there but infrequently.

I've been playing around with the steptronic since day 1.
however, compares to the tiptronic i have in my other car, i found
1) shifting is slower and doesnt hold gear too well in low rev
2) i cannot do the shift/gas/gear engage routine on the steptronic. Just like heel n toe in stick, this make shifting a lot smoother and better power delivery out of a corner.

It happened to me in the first 500KM - engage the clutch in 1 st gear and felt a sudden power loss - did not help when I was going up an incline in stop & go traffic. Man was that ever dangerous. After 500 km the problem did not occur again. Read the manual and it said that the clutch will break in after 500km.

I had informed BMW of this problem immeditely on the first day. The followed up on it after a week, so it seems that they are pretty concerned.

Also one note changing the filter on the car actually helps - as it is a lot smoother of the line now. Maybe it would help .

here is the thread that explains the software upgrade in more detail.

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...=&pagenumber=1

actually, version 34 is out already according to here2help. if you don't have problems, i don't think the software upgrade is necessary. but the upgrade definitely solved my lurching/surging problem at low speed. hope this helps answer your question.
