Oil Change After Run In

How necessary do you guys think on oil change after the 2000km recommended run in? I m one of the older fashion gang and believe that it is necessary. However, cant believe that the service rep in BMWHK tried so hard to dissuade me from doing so.... Also they charge HK$1400 for a simple oil change. I m taking my car to the gas station…

They charge only HKD 1400 ? They try to charge me HKD 2000 around. But they say they provide this oil change as 16000KM free oil change. Anyway, I will change the oil for every 3000. Yes, must be in gas station. Some riders have tried the oil change near the old airport. Please check the old topic

I had mine changed at BMW and I think it cost me around $1400 or $1500. I would do it at gas station next time!

By copy Adam, was it you in Pacific Place yesterday?

Re: Oil Change After Run In

What's so expensive. Around 2 months ago, I contacted the former service advicer, he quoted the service charge for changing the oil was less than $300(of course not including the oil charge). It seemed a little bit cheaper than what I had been charged b4(around $300 plus Shell Oil charge $300, recommended by the garage). So far, my MCS is running smoothly.

I've got another 2K before I change my oil. Was told by a mechanic who has worked on the MCS before that - 1st should be around 5K and then at 10,000Km . Basically he said to let the engine run in. As for every 3,000 Km oil change don't know if it's necessary as we are running on 100% Synthetic Oil. It seems everything i learnt in the pass 15yrs has been thrown out the window....

I have my MINI's oil changed at around 1500km. The result is quite dramatic as you can feel the engine is running smoother. Thereafter I will have the oil changed every 5000km or once a year.

Hm, is it me or...

I've had my MCS for 3 weeks now, and have put 5000 km on her:-) So I guess that 5000 km or once a year is not for me.

Cheers

Hong Kong is relatively small - so putting on 3K on month is considered high mileage.

Right ! I just use my car for weekend and some fine night in weekdays. It is only 80 Km around when I drive all day. My car is running 2900 something after 6 months. My previous car is running 16000Km after 6 years. So sad!

Hello,
I 'm trying to work more for my right foot, but cannot give out work till 8:00 every night. Also I not driving my car to work. That's why the clock's reading is so low.
I just change my Air filter and cable last weekend, it running fast and a little bit smooth. BTW, did you get the spark plug yet? If yes, we can change those on Sunday.

Hi Cliff,

Hong Kong is very much qualified to have its own forum. From Jan 2003 to May 2003, around 180 MINIs has already made their way to Hong Kong. Not to mention the hundreds of cars delivered in 2002. I believe there will be more and more MINIs to come.

Yup, did change mu oil and filter regularly at 5000km, it is much much smoother than before, would difnitely recommend a few oil changes on my own in-between the dealer service interval.

HK$1400-$2000 for an oil change? That's outrageous. Here in the States, it costs us US$50. Do a search on "oil change" in this forum and print out the instructions (with photos), then take it to a service station and have them do it for you. Make sure you specify fully synthetic Castrol or synthetic Mobil 1 oil. And make sure you get the right oil filter.

By the way, BMW/MINI will charge for your oil change if it is before the scheduled 10k miles. I paid for my own oil change at 1.5k miles.

Yellow Cooper Do not believe in MINIHK's crab...

... on no oil change after run-in and before 5000km
just bought the oil filter from BMWHK @$65/piece, went over to Koloon Bay's Esso Gas station for an oil change (Golden Mobil 1 @$850, my car has 3500km on). the car feel soooooooo much more responsive.
DO GET AN OIL CHANGE AFTER RUN-IN. c my earlier post on how BMWHK dissuade me from doing so...
