Anyone know how to set up/activate GPS receiver

Wondering if any of you techno wizards out there know what has gone wrong with my new TomTom Navigator 5 on XDA11i.
It has all been activated and I have the GB map on and working but it keeps giving the messages 'No GPS device' and Waiting for a vaild GPS signal'.
Now I got this thing on Monday and have travelled about in the car for the past 3 days at work with the receiver in the windscreen (not heat reflective) and nothing.
TomTom support state that it can take up to 45 mins for a satellite to lock on at first then your up and running. I have still nothing.
There is power to everything, little green light flashing on receiver.

Anyone got any fixes or tips to get this bloody thing working.

Oh,....and if theres anyone from TOMTOM reading this reply with a fix please because your customer support on phone and e-mail stinks............its as bad as getting in touch with Sky ......and thats bad!!

You have to start TomTom and go to Change Preferences then on to Show GPS status.
From there select Configure and follow the questions that asks. If you don't know the
answers go to www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/forum and do a search. If
you can't find the answer ask the forum members for help they are very friendly. Sorry I
don't have any answers as I don't know what gps hardware you are using.

Which GPS receiver are you using, Tomtoms own or an aftermarket one ??

On the GPS Status page under Configurations, is the Yellow & Black Round icon "Revolving" ?? This indicates correct Bluetooth pairing with the GPS Device.

Try getting a Lock with the receiver out of the car {& car stationary} & give it 10 minutes ... How many Satellite Bars do you see on the GPS Status page, & are they Grey or Blue ??

Sorry, forgot to mention. It is a wired TomTom GPS receiver.
I have one of those stick on the window cradles. Everything is powered by the cigerette lighter via a 3 way connection that sends power from lighter to both PDA and receiver and obviously the reciever connects to the PDA via the same cable.
The circle icon has never spun round yet to say I have a signal and the sateliite bars have never appeared. What I may do is leave the car on the drive stationary with ignition switched on for an hour or so and see if something locks onto it.

It definatly isnt plug in and go as tomtom say.

That's easy then, when you get to the Configure questions just press the arrows until
"Tom Tom Cable GPS" and press select . Because it is TomTom's own you don't
have answer any further questions like baud rate. Then stay on the GPS status page
and watch the little columns increase in size and number until a valid signal is received.
Don't do this parked in a garage or a drive between two houses at least back out as far
as the road.

Tried this morning with the car parked up for a couple of hours, bu still unable to pick anything up. As stated, everything is powered up, and had the GPS status screen on but nothing.
I honestly dont see what the problem could be, especially when its the proper wired TOMTOM receiver.

Anyone with a plan 'B' would be appeciated.......

As Steve mentioned, when you initially set it up on the Xda, did you configure it correctly to the TomTom Wired GPS receiver when prompted. ??

Also, Did the TomTom program come on a Pre-Loaded Memory Card, or did you active-sync it from your PC ??

Yes, when originally set up and activated it was set to the tomtom wired GPS receiver,
and the program/map came on a pre loaded memory card.
It wasnt active-sync set up from the PC, just set up through the product code that came with TT5 and the code that you are given on screen on the PDA when the card was first inserted, after that I went onto the website www.ttcode.com and you enter those 2 codes you already have and the website gives you a third and final code to activate the map etc,
which it did ok.

Do you think it is possible to remove the whole TT5 program from the PDA and start again and see if that works?

I'm starting to give up

(Thanks for all help up to now anyway, much appreciated)

Done a bit of forum searching on this one & it seems there might be a problem with the XD11i card slot /or reader as it likes some cards better than others .
And also a compatibility problem if you have Windows Mobile 2005 installed.

But I think the solution to Your problem can be found in This Thread in Post 2 >>

Thanks to all that replied and tried to help, it is now working.........superbly may I add.

The fix?.............as simple as going into start/settings/connections/beam and then unticking the box that says 'receive all incoming beams'

So now we all know for next time............Thanks again
