Why do the windows go down then up....

I remember reading this before, but for the life of me can't remember why the windows briefly go down an inch or so, then back up when you exit the car. I just got my DS/W MCS this weekend, and it's driving me crazy that I can't remember why it does this.

to stop the window from shattering when you close the door, and so you can open the door

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

A lot of frameless windowed cars do this, so it gives a good seal, without, as Rakey says, breaking the glass/surround. I

its not a cheap feature either, as a second window motor has to be added, so its a sign of quality design consideration

so point it out to folks, impress ladies with it, and enjoy

Couldn't you just read your manual? It's written in there in plain language.

So Why Then !!

Do the facelift models drop more than the pre facelift.

Never had a problem with the previous model, this one drops a good 20 mm or so.

Not only can you impress the ladies, they can trim their nails at the same time

It's the first thing I did. I must have missed it. Besides, this sight is usually a friendly place to get answers. Usually. And I'm glad I asked anyway--learned more than what would have been in the manual--thanks Rakey and Paul!

Yeah--we don't need no stinkin' manuals, and any guy who has satellite navigation should lose their Man's Club card too!

My car often forgets to do it, say you put the windows up with the doors open and then shut them the glass bashes and marks the roof trim!

disagree, Sat Nav gives another toy, more buttons to press, and something to woo ladies with

Also helps see how sharp corners are which are coming up, so you can throw the ladies around in your MINI more

Ok, OK, a compromise: you can have Sat Nav and not lost your Man's card if you're not married, if in any way shape or form it helps with those of the opposite gender.

If you're married though, it's much, much more fun not to have it. Nothing like being totally lost, without a map in an unfamiliar hostile area, where the natives are toting guns and expressions of ill will, just waiting for your car to slow down enough so they can get in a good shot (or if unarmed, steal your hubcap). Ah, to see the look of sheer terror in your wife's eyes as you drive by the same burned out apartment complex for the ninth time, and to have her physically shake you, screaming "Where the 'ell are we ?" until your brains are the consistency of scrambled eggs, which immediately triggers the Y chromosome to reply "I know EXACTLY where we are, I come here all the time!!" THAT is priceless, and would be totally ruined by Sat Nav.

Amazing I'm still married after all these years...Hope my wife never reads this.

first time i saw this window drop feature was on the jag xk8 & it impressed me then. its great that features like this have been included on the mini - for me the frameless window is one of the features that really makes it special

I'm most certain that the window drop feature is so that BMW can jack you for a $400 window motor in a few years time when the window has traveled 60,000 miles 20 cm at a time.
Wow, that sounds a little bitter doesn't it?
