I have a July 2002 build Cooper S.

The glove box won't stay shut. Initially, it would open on bumpy roads. Now, just a few days after the problem first presented, any bump in the road will pop it open.

I found a thread on Mini2 that recommended taking it to a dealer for warranty repair. I am out of warranty at this point.

Anyone have a fix for this problem? I don't see any spacers to adjust. The mechanism seems to be well centered and after some WD-40, it moves very smoothly, but it still spontaneously opens.

Hi Bob,

Had this problem myself and found a number of threads on the issue. Basically you have two choices: the "tug hard" method and the "adjust latch" method. Check out this thread and you should be able to track down good descriptions of both methods.

P.S. I ended up pulling apart the glove box adjusting the latch. Haven't had any further problems in over a year.

ahhh yesss... the Forever Opening Glove Box....

I used to wedge a folded wad of paper in the seam to keep it shut, and then sold the car, so I guess that's not much help... sorry!

CooperCooper - thanks for pointing me to that earlier thread. I haven't tried the duct tape solution yet. Solution #2 (a well-defined whack to the glove box lid) didn't do the trick. I'll get on the duct tape tonight.

You mentioned you took your glove box lid apart. It looks all sealed up to me. How did you get it apart?
