Anyone fitted Genesis 6x9 subs in a Mini?

Looks like I'm getting some Genny 6x9 subs for my car, does anyone have any tips about fitting them and getting them sounding good?

I'm told you have to heavily deaden the inner panels and in an ideal world seal off some gaps with expanding foam. I assume the dis-assembly procedure for the car is the same for all years of Mini (mine is a late 05 build) and it's just the deadening and sealing that might be tricky.

Is there space for an MDF spacer between the metalwork and the speaker to give a more rigid mounting point?

Cheers!

hi there.

having replaced many a quarter panel on a mini here are my suggestions:

the speaker is mounted onto the inner quarter panel with 7mm screws, and the mounting is quite rigid, so mdf rings are probally not needed.

when you have removed the speaker, what you can feel behind is the actual body panel. i would recomend usind some dynamat or the equivelent to reduce vibrations but apply carefully as you don't want to put high spots in / or damage the paint on your bodywork.

it might be an idea to also run a small strip of sealer/double sided foam stuff (like what holds badges on) around the edge of the mounting hole to make sure you do not get any vibrations.

hope this helps

Just in case anyome else is interested I found a post by Gordon Taylor (owner of Genesis) about doing this on another forum..

Quote:
Hi Guys,
Here's how we fitted them in our BMW Mini.
Dynamat the rear quarters, then use some builders foam to seal the rear cavity where it vents into the bootette. Feed the sub cables through before you use the foam, and go easy as it expands quite a bit after initial application.
This turns the rear 1/4 into a sealed enclosure of a bit over a cubic foot. Connect cables & mount subs in standard locations. Don't solder the wires on - use crimps!
Refit panels, hook up and enjoy. On our Mini we added about 3dB of boost @ 40 Hz from the parametric on the P5 to make the bottom end a bit more 'solid'. The resonance ends up around 55Hz which is about the same as a sealed box sub will be in the correct enclosure. The max SPL isn't as high as a modern 10" sub as the excursion is less, but it's plenty unless you are a basshead. The 6x9's are also much more efficient so 300W will give full excursion and then some.

Regarding the build quality, the resin chassis is more expensive than a stamped metal one.
The magnet is optimised for free air mounting - a large magnet will give less bass, not more.
More importantly the SQ is very good, and the reliability has been excellent - we haven't had a single unit back. You wouldn't have thought the Italians could build anything that well but they do.....

Gordon
