Upgrading Wave to Boost

Has anyone ever brought a MINI with the Wave stereo and had it upgraded to the Boost? The reason I ask is that I have the Wave in my Cooper and I am quite disappointed with the sound. I rang my dealers to ask how much it would be to upgrade it. He said that I need to have the speakers upgraded aswell as they are different and it would take them a few hours to fit it all. I was budgeting for about £500 but the dealer reckons it would be nearer £800.

I can't believe that the speakers need to be changed as loads of people have the Wave and upgrade to Sony's and Kenwoods without changing the speakers.

The other option is to get the Sound Module thing, but I'd need to resarch that more. I also want to upgrade the Wave because it looks crap compared the boost. I'm really starting to regret not having the Boost fitted.

At that price I would ditch what you have and fit a new separate head unit. You could get a great system for £800.

I've got the boosted single CD which to me sounds excellent, loud and clear - don't think it's worth £800 though.

There have been other threads on here and I seem to remember that the boost was just another head unit not a separate power amplifier.

I might ask and see if they can upgrade just the Head Unit and leave the speakers alone.

A third party HU is an idea although I don't know how I could get it to drive my Mini Cd Changer and they don't seem to fit in properly, they seem to have a gap around the top. I be worried about someone nicking it aswell. The Boost would be unlikely to be nicked as it's useless to anyone other than a Mini owner.

I was led to believe, that certainly back in September, the only difference between boost and Wave is the head unit - I had this confirmed at the time by MINI customer services.
(Oh, except that with Wave you get a more standard radio connector, and with Boost you get some sort of bizarre connector that then requires a converter to fit a standard radio )

Search the threads - There's an ICE installer who posts round here....
The wave is a Philips radio, so if you go for a Philips replacement, I would guess that the CD changer would work with it.

I've got 2 grand's worth of ICE in my car, and we're still using the standard speakers - which aren't audiophile quality, but are more than adequate.

GBP800 would buy you a good quality radio, fully installed... In fact, IMHO, I would be surprised if you couldn't do better than the Boost upgrade, AND have a replacement CD-changer thrown-in with the deal!

Sextons car radio may be a good place to start.
Here's an idea - How about asking round in the for sale/ wanted sections for somebody's old Boost radio - There seem to be loads of people who have subsequently upgraded their systems... There must be someone looking to offload an old BOOST radio.

I've just heard from my dealer and he informs me that the price quote he gave me was wrong and in fact they will fit the Boost Tape Head Unit for £465.00. So I guess that is a bit more bearable.

May I suggest that you see if anyone that has replaced their boost head unit with an aftermarket head unit and see if their want to sell you their old Boost.

The speakers should be the same for the Wave and the Boost. However the connector at back of the radio may be difference. Boost radios have always had a flat pin connector, but the early wave radio used a round pin connector. So I would check what you wave radio has. (your dealer should be able to tell you off the computer)

That's still a stupidly expensive price. Look to see if someone is selling one second hand. £465 for a tape player really is way too high. I believe Sony headunits can be made to work with the standard CD changer, not sure if anyone's done it yet though...

I know, it's an absolute rip-off. I haven't got money to burn. If a Sony would work the Changer and could be fitted nicely then that would be great. I'll ask around some of the hi-fi places, they may have done one before. I'll put a message in the Wanted section aswell.

CD Changer

The factory one will only work with BMW head units, and I have not seen a converter box that will do this. Most converter boxes go the other way ie a BMW headunit controling a Sony cd changer.

But hay ask, and see if they have a converter box that does what you want. If they can make it go one way the should be able to make it go the other way.

Thanks

Thanks for all the help. I visited my dealer today and had a listen to the Boost. It sounds much better than my Wave so I have got them to order me one (£470) and they will fit it in a couple of weeks time.

If you listen to MW don't bother! As I've just posted in faults section, every Boost radio we checked at the dealers on Friday had a really bad speaker vibration on MW. After they damaged my roof lining fitting the wrong sun visor, I'm after a speaker upgrade out of them to try and sort it.

I don't think I've ever listened to the Radio in my MINI. I just play Cd's

This is proving to be an absolute nightmare at the moment. I booked the car in on Friday and they rang me at midday to say that they were having problems and that the adapter they had got didn't have the right connections and therefore it couldn't be done that day.

So anyway I picked up the car and they said they'd ring me about it on Monday (Today). They rang me up and said that there was a Retro kit that would convert the Wave connections to Boost, but unfortunately it hasn't been released yet. They said not to worry and that they would try to get more information. They rang back later and said that they'd e-mailed BMW and they need to order 6 different parts and that they will be in Wednesday. So hopefully this might solve the problem.

Finally I have had the Boost installed and boy what a difference
My advice to anyone out there - Do not even contemplate getting the Wave stereo unless you are going to buy an Aftermarket Head Unit

Good to see you are happy with the change to the boost.

Do you know what parts they finally used to install your New boost headunit.

Not sure what the adapter they used actually looked like as I never saw it. I just know that it was made up of 6 part numbers and that it would have cost £35. Luckily I didn't have to pay for the cable as I had been inconvenienced. They also knocked 20% off the price of the Head Unit so I'm more than happy.
