raising the dead (uh, I mean the dead pedal)

After having my MCS for just over a week, the low placement of the dead pedal is driving me nuts. I did a search here and was pleased to see others with the same complaint. Only problem is that all those posts are old and none of them had a solution.

For me the dead pedal is uncomfortable and the transition from dead pedal to the clutch is very awkward. Other cars I've driven have had dead pedals more in line with clutch when it is not pressed, not in line with the clutch when it is all the way pressed down.

Anything new on the idea of raising the dead pedal?.

It's quite funny you should bring this up. My Dad and I were discussing the other night how MINI have got it right with their positioning of the foot rest.

The whole point of having a rest is so your foot doesn't have to be at the uncomfortable angle on the clutch pedal. The rest in the MINI is set at the foots natural angle when at rest not at the upright angle required by the clutch.

The other issue with rests that are more upright is it increases the risk of catching the left side of your foot against it when trying to depress the clutch resulting in the engine still being engaged in emergency braking situations. If it is in the normal clutch position it is also easy to try and press down on it in an emergency thinking your foot is actually on the clutch.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Hey there,

I am not sure how the dead pedal mounts?? but there should be some way of "shimming" it up a little bit. Maybe add some washers or ?? to the under side of the pedal, OR buy another pedal and install it on top of the old one??

I will have to check my Bentley manual to see how it mounts - I think a little exploring and a trip to the local hardware store might fix your problem.

I'll update soon

It mounts with two 10mm nuts which are used to lock it down to two permanently mounted studs about a 1/2 inch tall. Peel the aluminum plate off, It is only glued on and you will have access to the nutts. I made a raised dead pedal and would not be without it . The stock one is way too low for quick pedal work. WIth a raised one I can literally leave my heel in place , roll the top of my foot inboard and press the clutch. It is so much faster than the stock set up and when you are bracing in turns you are not leaning to the left as with the lower pedal.

The dead pedal is different on LHD cars in that the position is ahead of the fuse box on the exreme left front. The mounting can be exposed but it is recessed to the point where repositioning is difficult - and then you have to take care not to block the fuse box door. If anyone has a solution pls post pics!
