| Ashes and dust Maximus! | The Best Sat Nav Hi all! Not sure where this thread should go, but I just wanted to know if anyone is using a non-factory fitted sat nav system, if so what it is, and what they think about it. I'm looking for one and can't seem ti find any decent reviews! Cheers James |

Offline | The interior and ICE forum. Moved for you. ![]() For what it's worth I've used Navman and TomTom, both have pros and cons, not completely happy with either. My unit is an old Navman unit, and at the cost you can pick them up for their OK. Garmin seem well rated too. |

| Ashes and dust Maximus! | Well I'm after a portable one that we can move form car to car. We've got a Merc with the built-in one, but another 3 cars that could benefit from some sat nav action. I've had a look at the TomTom One, and it looked reasonable enough. I just have no idea how well these things hold the satellite, and how easy the instructions are to follow. What I've heard so far is that TomTom are good, and pretty much as close to an industry standard as it gets. But that there are other good ones.. I just need to know what those good ones are . |

Offline | I recently bought the Navman N60i - excellent machine - but I sent it back and replaced it with a ViaMichelin X-980T - another excellent machine with awesome mapping. But that's going back too. Trouble is, with each of them, you can program in a multi-stop route (a Mini run for example), but you can't save the route and stops in either, and it's even worse with the Navman because you can only start your journey from your current location. So it looks like the TomTom ONE Europe is the one to go for if you want to input future journies, but I have yet to take delivery of that one. |

Offline | Have a look at Pocket GPS World for great reviews and info. I've got a tomtom one v1. It uses the latest Sirfstar III chipset which is very good at picking the satellites up. For £199 you can't beat the tomtom one v2 if you want a straight forwards sat nav with all the required features and UK maps. There is a european version too. Try this site for the best satnav prices: Find Deals for Favourite GPS Systems The Garmin stuff is good too - my missus has a Garmin i3 - simple but good. ![]() |

Offline | Take a look at the Garmin Nuvi 660. I've been looking for some time and this is the best one I've come across for a combination of features and portability. Here is a link to a review; Garmin nüvi 660 review by PC Magazine ![]() aka KeithP |

Offline | I have been using a Tom Tom for about 2 years and think it is excellent. I have upgraded the software a couple of times to keep the functionality up to date and have added speed cameras plus warnings that say what the limit is as I approach a camera. There is lots of things like this available on the internet and Tom Tom make it easy to add such things. But don't take my word for it. Which? magazine tested Sat navs in September. They rated Tom Tom Go 910 a Best Buy although to be fair the Garmin Nuvi 300 and Magellan Roadmate 800 also got that rating. They also thought the Becker Cascade 7944 and Navicore Personal were good |

| I miss my MINI | I have used the Tom Tom, Garmin and OEN NAV and all have ups and downs... However, with you being in the UK, Roadangle has a new unit out that combines the cameras with nav. Road Angel Navigator 6000 combines full UK street mapping with ROAD ANGEL and the No.1 safety camera and accident blackspot alert system. looks pretty slick. Global Moderator ![]() |

![]() The Muffin Man | Not to be a thread thief But I am also looking at getting SatNav. I dont have a lot of money but tempted to save up to get one fo the more expensive models eg tomtom 910 just due to the fact that it can work over europe plus USA & Canada. Now I dont go to the USA often, just on holiday, but think it would be worth having. Is there anyway that the tomtom ONE's can be modded/updated to work in the US? What about tomtom mobile? As I have a PDA/Phone and I am thinking of getting a bluetooth gps receiver. But again, I am unsure. Does tomtom mobile work anywwhere but the uk? One more issue to consider is a system which alerts of traffic jams, roadworks and of course, speed cameras :P |

Offline | Tom Tom uses a removable SD card. You can buy maps and add them to the card. I had to buy a bigger blank card for my Go to add the france map which i bought from Tom Tom. I expect that you can buy a US map to add to the card in a One but it would be worth checking the Tom Tom website or even emailing a query to their help desk as the maps are quite expensive. |

| I miss my MINI | I have Tom Tom loaded on my MDA II (T-mobile PDA) here in Germany. When I go to the USA, I simply pop another SD card in with the maps that I want and switch to them. It works like a champ. The only down side that I have heard is that it can take some time for the GPS to resync after being move 500 miles. The almanac has to be updated. A system that uses TMC is definetly a way to go. Unfortunetly this is rather new in the USA and not really used yet. I tossed my 06 MCS hu and bought a Euro one off Ebay to get TMC on my OEM nav here. So far it has been worth every penny paid. ![]() Global Moderator ![]() |

| cook pass babtridge | i've had a tomtom go500 for a couple of years now & find it very easy to use, the touch screen is excellent, the traffic system is very good for warning of jams on your route & you can choose to either automatically re-route or to be asked - also if the re-route doesn't save any time it will tell you. it has the ability to store itineries which is ideal for mini runs, plus with the tomtom home software loaded to your pc you can programme routes & check traffic conditions from your desktop rather than sitting in the car. |
