I broke it :-(

Hi peeps,

I have an MCS 2002 with a MK3 Sat Nav, in the process of updating the software to V28 the screen went blank and the software update disk is stuck in the unit, I tried disconnecting the battery and ejecting the disc but no joy

It looks like I may have to replace the unit so before I go out and buy a new one I'd like to double double check .

Will a MK4 DVD based unit from an X5 or 3 Serires work?

Thanks

I'm not farmiliar with the unit, but I know most computer drives, even slot loading like in a car, have a small hole one side of where the disk goes that's like a manual eject. Unravel a paper clip in poke it in the hole and the disk pops out!? Worth a look anyway, can't believe there's no way to get out a stuck disk, someone on here must know!

Ugh.... OK, first, V28 will not work with the MK3. Only the MK4 is compatable with that version. However, the V28 disk does have the latest firware for the MK3, I have heard reports of problems.

The older units have issues reading some flavors or CD R's.

That being said, there are a few things you can try before you give up.

Disconnect the battery power for a few minuets and then power it back up. This will force a total reboot of the system and may free the disk.

If that works, you may need to get a version of the older software to load up. You can find this at X5world. Use the latest MK3 software.

It is possible to actually straight swap the MK3 with the MK4 to get DVD capability, but it is pricey.

Just checked the X5World site and it looks like they are no longer hosting the downloads. However, they have provided links to other sites for the firmware.

Cool thanks guys, the only reason I tried v28 was after reading a BMW tech note which said :-

"SITUATION
With the introduction of Navigation system operating software V28, there are currently 2 valid versions of
Navigation software.
Navigation system operating software V17.1 is used on MK III systems 1. without "Split Screen".
Navigation system operating software V28 is used on MK I, MK II, all other MK III navigation systems, MK IV DVD navigation systems on I-Bus vehicles, NAVI01, NAVI02 and NAVI03."

Hey Da Flake, your ISO image, do you know if was V28 P/N 01 59 0 141 891?

Thnx for all ya help and remember kids don't try this @ home. I'm off to ebay

I don't have a P/N for it as I typically pull them from X5world. That very image is the one that I used in my MK4 with no problems.

My understanding is that it is. I have not doen it myself, but those that have said it was pretty easy. Just remember to disconnect the battery while before you pull your seats and don't hook it up until the seat is back in or the Airbag light will illuminate.

Great Thanks again, I've just bought one and it's already loaded with V28 so I won't break this one.

Still think that your old unit is fixable.

I've bought a MK4 but once I have the seat out I'll try and remove the disk from the old unit and load up the software if I can find it. Soon I'll be noon as Dazz master of all that is Nav.
