I bought a wire from maplins to connect my ipod to my mini in the glove box. It doesnt work so do i need to get it programmed in? i plug it in and am pressing mode on the CD player with the iPod playing. is this right?

What wire? You should have a chip or unit between the radio and your IPOD. Could you be a bit more descriptive on what you bought? Was it the OEM adapter or was it an Icelink?

just thought about this... Did you buy an AUX adapter? If you did, what year is your MINI?

Just fitted the icelink plus from Mikey to my '06 mini - it is superb!! well worth the cash - and usual top service from newministuff....
