Airbag help needed

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and hoped that someone out there might be able to help me in my moment of desparation.

I have a 52 plate Mini Cooper which I cherish dearly and love to bits . I am expecting my first baby in 9 weeks time and need to find someone who can deactivate my passenger side airbag (mine wasn't fitted with a switch like later versions).

I contacted the dealership where I bought it from and they want to charge me £2000 for the priviledge (no way am I paying that). I was put onto someone in the Midlands by Modern Mini magazine about 8 weeks ago, but they have proved to be very unreliable and we haven't been able to get the work done. Time is starting to run out.

I live in Northumberland (about 10 miles out of Newcastle) and need to find someone fairly local who can help me out. Is there anyone out there who can recommend someone who can do the job?

Thanks

Jovigirl

The dealers tend to charge about £250 to £300 for this, and it takes (apparently), a few minutes to do!

£2k is daylight robbery.

Thanks for this. It was actually my local dealer that quoted me £2k. They told me that they need to contact BMW to get codes for the engine management system, I needed to sign a disclaimer to say I was responsible if anything happened in an accident and that it would require them to remove my dashboard to do the work. They also told me that I they would need my car for at least 2 days to carry out the work.

I thought they were pulling my leg, but my brother has a friend who works at another BMW dealership and he said exactly the same.

No idea. I think they just thought "pregnant woman lets try and rip her off". They must think I am stupid.

Fortunately my dad is an engineer and told me that there was no way they should be charging me that sort of money. He would do the job, but unfortunately he works on DAF trucks, so used to things a bit bigger and didn't really want to tamper with my prized possession. Electrics and airbags isn't exactly his strong point either.

I can't fit the pram in if baby is in the back. I have a Silvercross one that I love and it only fits with the back seats down.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the reply yesterday. You got my mind working overtime about it, so this morning I got my husband to ring another local dealership. And surprise, surprise, my dealership was trying to rip me off big style. The other dealer quoted me £350 +VAT. A bit better than £2K. I think we have decided to go with them as at least it is only about 15 miles from where we are.

Thanks again.

I can't believe they had the bare faced cheek to try and charge a couple of thousand!

Has to be the worst quote for any work I've EVER seen.
