changing to a multi function steering wheel

I currently have a 2 spoke basic leather steering wheel on a 2003 cooper but the surface has started to go, so I would like to replace it.

I have seen a 3 spoke multi function steering wheel for sale but it has no airbag. Would the airbag from my current wheel fit into 3 spoke multi function wheel that I've seen for sale? And if so, is it possible to connect everything up to a multi function wheel when you just have the standard one?

Any advice welcome, thanks!

You'll have to get a different air bag yours won't fit you can get them of ebay for around £85 as for the MFSW you'll have to have all the wiring fitted so the MFSW works not cheap as i saw on a thread here somewhere its over £700

Found the thread here you go

The JCW steering wheel and new style airbag would be £410 inc vat and discount
the m/f and cruise control kit would be £155.00 inc vat and discount but the kit would take around six hours to fit,it is a very envolved job this would bring the total cost for the wheel and
m/f kit to £1001.00
Cheers
Chris

There's a very good writeup on changing from 2-spoke to 3-spoke here:
http://web.mac.com/jonnieoh/iWeb/My%...%20How-To.html
However, that's assuming you already have MFSW on your car. Adding multifunction itself is a fairly involved process:

Thanks both that's really helpful. As I dont currently have a MFSW and it's so costly to retrofit one, I think I should probably keep looking for just a normal 3 spoke wheel to come up for sale then - ideally with the airbag! MF would be lovely but I dont need it to be honest, it's just a very nice to have. And there was me thinking this would be so simple....!

I've got a 2 spoke multi function wheel where the surface has started to go. If I get a 2 spoke wheel without multi function controls does anyone know if I can swap the multifunction controls over from the old wheel

I tried retrofitting mfsw on my 3 series a couple of years back. took about 3 hours according to instructions. The dealer said it was possible.

After all the work, wiring looms etc, it never worked. The stereo worked, but CC diddnt.

I called up thinking it would have to be activated on the electronics, to which bmw said it was not possible to retrofit!!!

So basically, do all your homework before even contemplating buying all the stuff!!

Focus > Mini One > Mini Cooper > Mini Cooper > BMW 316 > BMW 318 > MINI ONE > BMW 120i > MINI ONE PEPPER! - IM BACK!!

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I think people on here have successfully retrofitted the multi-function wheel. I visited my local dealer this morning, who told me that to retrofit the controls to a 3 spoke wheel was around £500 - this was the sale team though, and was just an estimate. I later spoke to the parts dept who told me the retrofit kit is £170 inc VAT (Part No. 65710395006), while the "Input Cylinder Clutch" (Part No. 21526758826, now superseeded) is around £55. On top of this you have 3.5hrs labour. It may be possible to reduce this time by supplying your car to the dealer with some of the trim already removed, or with the slip ring and steering wheel controls already fitted, so at least they wouldn't have to mess around with the airbag, etc.

So You can add the multi-function kit to a 3 spoke wheel but CD changer won't work if you have a CD radio boost.

Check NewMinistuff they have wirelooms which Mini won't sell separately.. I had the Wave tape deck with CD changer when I bought the car, I already had the CD boost radio from my last Mini, whenever I enquired about buying the loom for the Boost they told me I would have to be the whole radio at £400. Checked out New Mini stuff and they had the loom.

I think this has already been answered in rkw links. doh

What I was trying to say was 'can you multifuction inserts to a normal 3 Spoke wheel? If you have CD boost radio will the CD changer still work?

All 2-spoke steering wheels use the same airbag:
