Sony one feels much more solid than the tomtom. But the tomtom software is cartoony but easier to use.

Nearly all of us at Newminiseverns.com use Tom Tom as you can create, send and download route files to each other. Great for planned club runs and European trips.

Sony NV-52

Have a look at the Sony NV-52 from Halfords for £99.99 including a free case(http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryrn_81865).

I have had one for a few weeks and it works perfectly. Speed camera alerts are an extra £20.00 from the Sony website. I particularly like the way that sucker pad folder away it the back of the unit. It is also a perfect fit on the rev counter of my Cooper.

I had a NavMan (still got it in fact) and it's OK, but the TomTom is better from my experience. Quicker to work out routes, better mapping (when both up to date the TomTom seemed MORE up to date), better routing (although the NavMan was better for off-the-beaten track weird short cuts).

I done some research lately as I wanted a new satnav, and found the Snooper Indago to be the best for overall value for money. Which I ended up buying. the features are VERY good and is easy to use.

At £229 and FREE lifetime updates to the speed camera database I thinks good value!

It doesnt just do camera warnings.... but you get... advanced personal warning of:

•Gatso Cameras
•Truvelo Cameras
•SPECs Cameras
•MCS Cameras
•Average Speed Roadwork Cameras
•Watchman
•Speedcurb
•DS2 Speedmaster
•Mobile Gatso & Truvelo Cameras
•Mobile Laser Sites
•Mobile Camera Van Sites
•New Multi lens 'Daddy' Gatso
•Accident Hotspots
•High Risk Zones
•Digital Cameras
•Schools (optional)
•Congestion Charge Cameras

and more!

Good luck in your choice fella.

That snooper is very impressive for the price, are the maps reasonably priced to update?

There's no mention of a "Go via" facility for itinerary planning though, or one to divert around road blocks, nor for warnings of traffic delays.

I'd go for a TomTom ONE XL.

Cheapest or best?

Play first at whichever store is nearest then see what offers Pocket GPS World have at the moment.

I've bought 3 Tom Toms from them over the years - not all for myself - and have always had a free desk charger or sommat useful as a freebie. They help too!

Just bought a TomTom Go 720 from eBuyer as a pressie for £229 inc delivery.

I'm still using my (now venerable) Go 700 and have found it fantastic to use. If you have a Bluetooth capable phone, the Bluetooth feature gives you handsfree capability.

As I understand it from the specs, the 720 also has MP3 playback though an FM transmitter to your car stereo - haven't tried this yet - when I'm asked to help set up the pressie, I'll know.

Regards,
Tony.

Now: (unnamed as yet) is a 55 MCS EBlue+Chili
Previous: VBH was a 52 MC Chili red+Chili
