Offline | Hey All, I was just wondering if anybody had retro fitted the sat nav into their mini? If so how hard was it and did it cost a lot to do? If nobody has done this, does anybody know if ANY mini can be retro-fitted with the mini sat nav? As I have a 2002 mini, with no trip computor, can my mini still have the standard sat nav? Are there any step-by-step guides on how to do it?! Thanks for your help in advance KEL P.S- I know it would be cheaper to buy say a TomTom, however i really like the look of the 2 Dials between the steering wheel!! ![]() |

Offline | Randell that is a lengthy process, lol!!! Basically what I was after was was the 2 dials (speedo and rev counter.) I then wanted in replacement of the old speedo, to make a custom bracket, which meant that i could put a mobile phone (or my iPhone) in there, instead of using a sucker one on the window!! Sounds crazy but thought it may make my mini abit more individual!! Randall or Scrogg, Do you know where I could pick up a chrono pack from? How much will it roughly cost me? How hard would it be to fit and would i need any extra wiring looms (to contect the new speedo behind the steering wheel from the centre) Will this chrono pack fit in my 2002 (52) Mini Cooper (without trip computor!!) And lastly would I be able to move the new centre dials (oil temp, fuel etc..) somewhere else (not sure where yet?!) Cheers guys, your help would be GREATLY appriciated KEL |

Offline | I know but up to now it's the only way that I've managed it and other people I know have managed it without problems (apart from the big job scenario) .As I think I said in that thread I actually prefer the 2 little clocks (speedo & rev counter) on the steering-column rather than just the rev counter because it's easier to keep your eye on, I think they look pretty cool there, and they also do the surround for the 2 little clocks in anthracite, which my car is on the interior but I have got a silver speedo as that is the only option .As "Scrogg" has said look into getting The Cockpit Chrono Pack fitted as I think The Cockpit Chrono Pack can actually be retro-fitted to MINIs originally without it, therefore there must be some sort of kit, but it wont be straight forward, the same as most retrofits, and will most certainly need some sort of reprogramming and will need the mileages calibrating to keep the mileage genuine, another point to consider it (Cockpit Chrono Pack) was only introduced to the face-lift models (R50s, R52s R53s) so it may not be possible to fit it to your MINI (i have never fitted one to any model so I wouldn't know what is involved, I have removed few), I have seen people just buy the little speedo / rev counter & the clocks / gauges that replace the original central speedo but it's not just as simple as that as the dash wiring will be / is totally different .You may be able to get an auto-electrician to sort it all out for you but in my experience they seem to be a little weary of the little big MINI .![]() ![]() ![]() Destined to live life £5 behind. Offline | So on the facelift model of the first generation mini, have they actually changed the interior at all (or mainly the speed and rev counter?) I just thinking if they haven't thenthe fitments maybe the same!! Randall - could you confirm this? Have you noticed when TAKING out a chrono pack that it it is the same as pre-facelift models? Just out of interest do you take many Chrono packs out of vehicles and what do you do with them once you have taken them out? If i can use this chrono pack, then like you say it will just be a small matter of whether or not I will be able to locate the 3 Gagues found in the centre of the chrono pack!! I know that you can buy those little dials (like you get in those little sooped up boy-racer cars), but do you think it would be possible to fit them in to the mini? Do mini do any of these dials themselves? Randall - may I ask what you do for a living - do you tinker with minis pretty often?! Me thinking this could be a lot of hassle, but pretty cool if I manage to suceed!! KEL |

Offline | They did change bits of the interior but nothing that would effect fitting The Cockpit Chrono Pack , the main reason for my comment that The Cockpit Chrono Pack may not fit the pre face-lift models is based on the software issues (you may not be able to do the programming, I could be wrong ), as quite a lot of electrical components were updated / changed on the face-lift model .When you remove almost anything from the MINIs you find that all the actual plugs / connectors pretty much identical eg. in the case of the central clocks (Chrono, Sat-Nav, Big Speedo) you Will find that they all plug into each others looms (this should never be attempted unless you know what your doing , as damage could accrue ), but this does not however mean that they will work as although the plugs are the same the wiring will be different ie. more or less pins in one plug than another, pins / wires in one place on one plug for one unit may not necessarily be the same pin / wire, with the same function, source as for another unit unless it's actually a direct replacement part, the plug for the little clocks (rev-counter & speedo) and the large speedo is the same, it's just the wiring thats different (I think ).As for removing The Cockpit Chrono Packs, as it's been said before, it wasn't the most popular option, I have one at the moment I have 1 full setup but, I'm in the same position as you I want to fit to a pre face-lift (mine), but I'm not sure if it can be done and I've not had time to try and do it (or look into it), plus as it's not a kit the wiring needs tracing & sorting out (it's part off a loom). One of the reasons that I'm saying The Cockpit Chrono Pack can be retro-fitted is because, I was trying to buy some programming equipment and in the PDF document or the Instructions for the equipment it showed a sequence to go through for fitting The Cockpit Chrono Pack retrofit kit in the retrofit section (so my assumption that it can be retro-fitted is based on that, so I may be wrong ).The thing that I struggle with sometimes is the fact that most things need some sort of programming, although I can do everything else myself, the programming equipment will be very expensive, so I'm relying on the main dealer or someone who can access the equipment to do it for me (programming), although that can be OK, if one wire or component is faulty, not compatible then they're not interested in trying to sort it for you and it could get very costly, whereas if I had the equipment myself I may have been able to sort the problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() Destined to live life £5 behind. Offline | Ah so your of the same mind as me!! Yeah i definatley think that owning the equipment would be handy, however liek you say it could be very costly to buy it!! If you do decide to take the plundge and get the equipment, drop me a line and I will happy bring the car to you and pay you to use your equipment so that the chrono pack can be installed in to my mini! Do you already have the 2 dials already in the MINI or are you wanting to fit them in?! Did you get your chrono pack out of a damaged mini, if so how much did it cost you and was it hard to take it all out?! Do you know of anywhere where I may be able to pick one up from (you may have some local scrappies which may have one in?) I saw on ebay not so a long ago a person selling a double dial (rev-counter and speedo) which had been refurbed however I wasn't sure whether or not it would fit in the mini and if it did whether or not I would be able to take the leads straight out of the large speedo and put it in to the smaller one on the double unit!? Moving slightly off the main title, have you ever retro-fitted the trip computor into a mini, if so how hard was it and how long did it take? I know there are guides on here for doing it, but to be honest I would rather take it to somebody who knows what they are doing, or have done it before and can take me through it? Cheers matey KEL |

Offline | No they're not fitted, I've just got them on the shelf ready for when I have some tinkering time and as It will be my 1st time fitting them I won't know how long it will take (or if it can be done as mine is a pre face-lift) and the car is in use at the moment, I did get the kit out of a breaker but I had to have all the parts from the car, they're plenty of MINI breakers around nowadays, but as has been said before that particular kit is few & far between. Personally I normally stay away from eBay on stuff like that as it can be expensive and you can't check / test the items (they could be in-op ).The two pods will fit exactly where the old speedo is removed from (fittings are the same) and as I said I think the plug is the same (it's just wired up differently ).The trip computer, they're already threads on this if you search , however if you already have a speedo purchase a used good working order switch with the computer button on an then I think you can get a wiring kit for the trip computer for approx £20.00 from your dealer and once everything is fitted you then need it programming in at a main dealer.Or you can purchase a complete kit (providing you already have a rev-counter) from your main dealer for approx £100.00, you will then need to have it all fitted and then get it programmed in at a main dealer. (Check out this genuine retrofit kit (trip computer, rev-counter not inc), same part number in my accessories book where I got the £100.00 from) (This is the fitting instructions for genuine retrofit kit (trip computer) and what you get in the kit with the same part number as in my accessories book) Also check this one out for some genuine gauges , these are for cars up-to 07/04 MINIs and are approx £200.00 however the part number that I have it does say the part is ENDED / dis-continued.(Genuine OEM alternative gauges ENDED?) The kits that I have mentioned, the prices don't cover fitting & programing costs, they do include vat but the prices were only valid at the time of printing of my accessories book which was 08/05. ![]() ![]() ![]() Destined to live life £5 behind.
