Changing Head Unit - My First Time... eek! help!

Hello all,

I'm very new to this site and to the MINI scene. I had a classic for nearly 3 years and I'm soooo glad I have seen the light and moved over to the new Mini... I haven't smiled this much in a long time!!

Anywho, more to the point.

I have a MCS (55 reg) but it is very basic. I only have the tape player head unit so as you can imagine I want to change it ASAP as its a load of tosh!

I've never changed a head unit before, but I have had a quick read up and I know that I need the fascia adaptor and a wiring adaptor.

My questions are...

how do i know which wiring adaptor I need as I can find 2 different ones?

Is it easy to change the head unit? even for a complete novice?

Is it a simple case of un-doing the screws on the down tubes, pullin them to one side then undo head unit, un plug it, slide in cage, attach wiring adaptor, plug in head unit and re-attach down tubes?? Is it really that straight forward?

Sorry to babble on on my first post but I wanna know if i'm better off spending the 40notes and getting halfrauds (the robbing gits) to fit it.

Cheers me dears

Steph xx

Hi and welcome to MINI2. Changing the stereo is easier than it sounds, but maybe a tad more involved than you suggest. Really wouldn't let Halfords anywhere need it. See instructions in the link.

NewMINIStuff.com DIY Guides

Now do you have a Wave or a Boost stereo. Link below should help.

Then with knowing this you will probably need the relevant one of these

Good luck and enjoy the MCS.

hi... again,

i came and bought a kit off you at Bingley a couple of weeks ago.

I'm in the middle of trying to fit the new headunit but it seems the aerial is the wrong one?!

Do you supply different ones or is it a case of visiting halfrauds to sort this bit out??

Would be greatful for your help as my cars apart in bits and I wouldn't mind going home soon.

Cheers

Steph

Facia - there is only 1 size of facia - I have sold over 1000 & fitted 100's never heard of one being too small
Aerial - the adaptor goes from Mini plug to a standard male aerial plug ? What aerial socket has your pioneer got?

ok so yeah i was doing something daft with the fascia.

the problem I'm having now is gettin the cage to stay in... not only is the cage really loose and too small (or the hole is too big), but i can't get the parts to bend out to keep it in place as its completely smooth all the way round.

any advice as to wat to do?

The Mini hole isnt smooth at the top , get as many locks as possible at the top
Also most cages have a few deeper locks further back which you should be able to bend
