does anyone know why there seems to be two diffrent types of arm rest for the r53, one has plastic sides & looks like it fits into the rear cup holder & the other has metal side that bolt under the seats >>>

The one that bolts under the seats was developed for fitment to pre-facelift models:

2004-09 Version - Retrofit [details]

2005-02 Version - Factory or Retrofit

so i take it that either will fit pre & post face lift 1st gen models..

Fitment of the the 2005-02 Version to a pre-facelift model will require replacing the Handbrake Console:
