Front seat

Hi
just bought an 02 cooper S. The drivers side front seat does not slide forwards when the lever is pressed, only tilts. Should both seats tilt and slide? The dealer said he will look into it and that it might be for safety so anyone in the back can only get out onto the pavement. Not sure i believe that or why else have the lever and tilt. Haven't had chance to check other cars as yet and never noticed until collected the car.

Look at the back left part of the seat..... as if you were sitting behind the drivers seat look to the bottom left corner and lift the cover on the corner,

Behind that there will be a little pin sticking out and it should have a wire attached to it, if it doesnt thats your problem it needs to be re-clipped on and it should work fine.

Like the above pic but that is the left passenger seat, when you depress the lever that wire pulls on the clip and disengages the linkage and allows the seat to slide forward.

Hope that helps,

Scott

Silver Black My cable has snapped!

Scotty Boy,
Any idea how awkward this is to fix? Drivers slide mechanism cable snapped presume its just a replacement from the dealers but is it just that or does it come with the black spring mechanism it goes on to beneath the seat? Any idea of price?
Cheers
Davey

TBH i havent got a clue how to replace that, i only know about that cable from getting JCW seats and that cable was unclipped aslo. i can have a look later and ill let you no if you want.

Shouldnt be to bad to do and the dealers will probably charge you over £100 labour.

I had a similar problem, only with the passengers side seat. Took it to BMW and they said I needed new seat runners. 2.5 hours and £200 later and it still doesn't work. Spoke to the Chief Mechanic there and he said I need a new seat back. Looking at about £350 for it fitted. Got a refund as they fitted the wrong part, but not impressed with it costing so much to fix.

Scott,
Thanks for info. Asked at dealers and it is £109 parts as it is part of the seat runner mechanism.
(Hope i don't have the same problem as MiniMatelot). Had a look at the removal process on a Workshop disc I got off e-bay and it doesn't look too hard at all.
Will post back when task complete - probably in a couple of months when i get time to do it.
Cheers
Dave

Turns out it was the runners/cable after all. The guys at BMW fitted it incorrectly. I took my car to an independent BMW specialists last week and asked them to take a look at it. The bloke laughed and said that the cable hadn't been fitted in it's bracket properly. Took him 30 mins and £50 and the seat now works fine.

You could always try MiniMatt and see if he can get you the runners for cheaper. I got a rear brake caliper off him for £25+VAT the other day.
