Angry Problem: Alpine CDA-7894 and the cold weather

Seems my Alpine CDA-7894 doesn't like the cold. Whenever it drops below -7c or so and the car has been outside for a while the unit seems to give me control and display problems. Usually the buttons, aside from volume, don't work and the display is blank. If I pop off the face sometimes I'll get it to display then then it freezes. Music still comes out but all I can do is change the volume. At night my MCS is stored in a garage and it works no problem the next morning. There has even been a few times where the unit didn't turn on at all when I get into it after work. It takes 20-30 minuites or more for everything to come back.

Would anyone consitiute this a "normal" or would you say there is something wrong with my unit? It's a real pain getting a head unit repaired because they'll have it forever and in the mean time I have a big hole in my dash. Not to mention the pain of removing it.

Thoughts?

Paul

Hate to reply to my own thread but a quick check of the owners manual reveals the following:

Be sure the temperature inside the vehicle is between +60°C
(+140°F) and –10°C (+14°F) before turning your unit on.

Oh well, guess that's what we get for living in Canada we're also having a colder than normal winter here in Toronto.

Wonder what the specs say for the stock unit? Aside from an occasional skipped CD while very cold it works fine at -20C and below.

Yes it does work better in the cold, but stop for a moment to remember how badly it sounds and how it can't read mp3 id tags and how it has no equalizer and............ (:

I'd feel much better if someone else was having the same issue as me with the same or even another Alpine unit. I'll try not putting the faceplate on until the car warms up and see how that works. See if it comes back to life quicker than putting it on and waiting.

I've got a 7897 (i think that's the model, has the tilting, retracting faceplate and internal amps) and have had no problems, even though the temps in NY lately have been in the teens (Farenheit)and my car is never indoors. Balmy compared to Toronto
