DIY DIY: How to retro fit the onboard computer

Please find attached a zipped PDF detailing the retrofit of the on-board trip computer. I know we have a PDF in the OEM Fitting group but this one is easier to install and offers a cheap alternative. Cost me under £10 to fit! That compares to £100 that BMW want.

MINIAC perhaps you would be good enough to post this pdf in the DIY group. I'm not sure what others think but for some of the guides PDFs might be a nice format, easy to print and use.

Unfortunately, I don't have the software to unzip the file. Can anyone provide access to the actual PDF?

MINIAC and others, let me know if you have problems with the ZIP. I used the embbeded ZIP function in XP to create this, not the more traditional WINZIP utilities. I can download and extract the PDF just fine.

MINIAC if you want I can email you the PDF directly just PM me with your address if you'd like that.

Works for me and I'm on a Mac running OS X.
Who says Mac and PCs can't get on... after all, XP is the most Mac-like Wintel OS yet..!!

Sorry folks, I would have posted the PDF direct but... This is only zipped up and works fine all you need is to unzip the file using WINZIP

Thanks, I will chat with MINIAC and we will get this on the FAQ and DIY list, I will then also host the PDF un-zipped.

You truly are a genius GaryM!

Mines going in tomorrow, can it be reprogrammed before the switch is installed? How do you reckon the warranty stands on this?

the MINI has gone...

Yep, I would suggest that you print off theofficial PDF and show them page EN/12. This details the code change. Should'nt take them long either.

Although you won't be able to test the switch, as you don't have it yet, check that any configurable options you might have have had programed still work. I lost my comfort opening and courtesey headlamp delay.

As is always the case with these things I would say that you have invalidated the warrenty should any damage be found to be caused by what you have done. E.g. If you bust the speedo during the fit or knacker the electronics then don't go crying to BMW. Having said that it is a fairly safe install if you are competent.

Anyone know how much a new light-stalk/swithc with the computer button would cost?

I seem to recall from previous threads somewhere in the region of £50, try searching on retrofit OBC.

If you have the MFSW, this would be a good function for the button that has no function in the middle left side position on the back of the wheel.

I didn't fancy having the after market button so I decided to just order the replacement arm with the OBC switch on it. Using a combination of the two sets of instructions I have finished installing the OBC at a cost of £61.28 + VAT. Hopefully my dealer will be willing to update the software FOC when I go in this week.

Thanks to GaryM & BMW for saving me some cash

Would have been nice for free especially after you got the switch from them but even so 11 quid ain't bad for the work just a shame that the £100 option came in at £83.20 via this route.

Looks like the aftermarket switch is the only way to make this mod cost effective. This cost me a fiver and it looks like I was very lucky with my dealer.

However, I'm glad it is all working.

The way I look at it, the mod was cheaper than retro fitting it properly, plus I already have switches on the panel near the handbrake!

Happy with the OBC except it's making my right foot a bit lighter on the gas pedal cos I don't like seeing an average mpg below 30!

the MINI has gone...

Yeh,

I did not like seen the MPG either but it has not made my foot any lighter. I'm currently in the process of monitoring the accuracy of the guage at the moment. When I get the figure I'll let you know.

Drum roll please...

And the figures are, for the tank fills that I have monitored:

Trip computer reading Actual MPG
27.9 29.5
28.5 30.2
27.9 29.9

So far it looks as though the trip computer is 2 MPG out.
