Formula for Ideal Seat Position

The seat adjustments in my MCS are versatile - I have found several completely different feeling seat positions which work for me. Is there any formula for "correctly" setting your seat position for ideal control of the car?

seeing as my seats are always in another position from when i left them (??) i would especially appreciate such a formula. I wound up with a nasty pain in my right femur I blamed entirely on the seat positioning. Just under 15000 and no perfect position yet. Had one, lost it.

That having been said, I place the seat so that my eyes are level withe midline of the windshield, below the mirror. (right turns are occluded by the bugger if i'm up too high). The tach should be well in line of sight. Seat is back enough to allow foot/predal contact and so that Arms are slightly bent at the elbow with hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel. Upper legs are supported by the seat bottom. And an extended leg rests the left foot on the dead pedal. Lumbar is about 1/4 out.

Does that help?

Based on advanced driver training that I took a while back there were several aspects of correct seating position. First you hands must be at 3 and 9 as this gives you the greatest range of motion without having to lift your hands from the wheel. Second, your wrist should rest comfortably on the top of the steering wheel without moving your shoulder blades away from the seat back. Third, you should be able to extend your legs on all pedals without locking out your knees.

As for height I'm not aware of any guide. Sure, be comfortable and have a good view of the road.

This is just a guide. Being 6'3" I find that the wrist on the steering wheel just isn't possible for me in the MINI otherwise my legs are too close to the steering wheel.

I would pay MINI right now $3000 for a telescoping steering wheel and better seats with a longer seat cusion.

The formula that I have always followed is:
  • The seat should be back just far enough so that your left leg is not quite fully extended when depressing the clutch all the way.
  • The seat-back should be reclined just fare enough so that your palm touches the TOP of the wheel when your arm is fully extended.
  • Height is completely optional, but should be adjusted so that all the mirrors see exactly what you want to see.

Mind you, this formula isn't saying that you DRIVE with your palm on the top of the wheel, and this isn't a formula for DRIVING position, only how to adjust the seat.

YMMV

I have found this to be a good way to get a very comfy fit

i'm 5'8". if i sat that high i'd need a stool to get into the seat & sticks to operate the pedals!

i think mines pretty much as low as it goes.

I've done several long-ish trips in the car now, including the heartbeat & pennines run which were going on for 8 hours driving each over rough roads & at some speed & i've got to say i find the seating position as good as anything i've driven. The seat could just do with being a tad more grippy round the sides. Or i could put on a few pounds..
