built-in garage door opener?

I saw this post on the official MINI Forums, but thought the readers over here would have some better feedback.

===============
Does anyone know if I could use the BMW E39 universal garage door opener in my MINI? In the BMW , it's a factory option that fits next to the sunroof switch and cell phone mic in the overhead console. (the switch and mic are identical to those in our MINIs) I know it's trivial, but I hate having a big, ugly opener clipped on my visor. I've found the part at circle BMW and it sounds easy to install (just 2 wires) but then again, I don't believe the MINI is pre-wired the way the BMW is.

Doesn't that use two componets (the switch and a transmitter)? If it is, it may be a difficult install if you can't get a wiring harness for it.

I just used a piece of velcro and attached mine under the toggle switch panel where it can't be seen but is easily reached (not my idea -- saw someone else on the board do it and post pictures). My remote is pretty small though, probably 1.5"x3.0"x0.5" (Craftsman 1/2hp garage door opener). You could always get a new remote too -- Sears sells ones that look like mine that are universal for quite a few garage door openers.

Not sure, but see this:

For some ideas, and if you post on those current threads, you might get more direct help too.

Don't have an answer to your question JF,but I've always hated the opener clipped to the visor too.I have the drivers side shelf in my MINI,I got a momentary switch from RadioShack and wired it up to my opener that I mounted in back of the shelf.I used the blanking plate(for the driving lights)to mount the switch.The range of the opener changed very little,if at all and the switch falls naturally to my reach.

I would like for MINI to offer a factory installed Homelink remote garage door opener. My 2001 Chevy Impala LS has it from factory and it is fantastic. I am tired of carrying a brick sized remote garage door opener in the MINI.

I wired mine up to the 6th toggle and hid it behind the trim under the switches.
I thoght about getting a homelink system from another car, but at $17 the allstar opener was the cheapest option.
