MINI Alarm

I hate having to buy insurance. I live in a \"redlined\" area where they punish good drivers because of where they live. No tickets or accidents in over 30 years, single, but I pay more for the minimum coverage on two 30-year-old cars than a friend of mine with three new cars and a teenage son. He lives in an area that is not redilned, but is a terrible driver. Over the years, I have paid out enough in insurance that I could have replaced my vehicles several times over. I expect the MINI will be expensive to insure, but I won\'t know how much until it is officially here. Insurance companies love you when you pay in but don\'t turn in any claims, but have an accident that they have to pay on and they will drop you like a rock. It might make more sense to buy the minimum insurance required by law and put the extra in a bank account every year. If you drive carefully, garage your vehicle and be careful where you park it, you would be money ahead in the long run.

mr.bill . Your idea of minimum legal insurance coverage and self-insurance is logical in an ideal world. However, Sods Law would play catch-up sooner or later!!!

Also dcfkan, take the legal expenses insurance for the £10-15 option. As an ex-Insurance Bod, I can emphatically say that comprehensive cover is no substitute for legal expenses insurance. Insurance Co\'s aren\'t going to stick their neck out for you if they don\'t have to. In a disputed liability case your InsCo will settle for 50/50 on the basis of less admin etc/route of least resistance/you pay more at renewal - but with legal expenses cover, you\'ve got a free lawyer to argue in Court.

MINI Alarm

Martyn,

Where is the light? Do you mean the rear wiper housing?

Ive seen a spot on the top dash ( a few inches from the windscreen ) where a light may be located.

Also - what other features does the alarm bring? Chirps when activated / deactivated? Does it go off with a shock / thump to the car (I know BMW\'s dont).

Does it come with a seperate fob or does the key remote acticate / deactivate it?

Thanks in advance,
Baldie

The light is in the wiper stalk, see early prototype shots. By the wiper stalk, I mean the actual stalk that comes out from behind the steering wheel that you use to activate/deactive the wipers. This was an early idea, with the green flasher on the other side for the indicators. The green indicator light was later dropped.

Paul,

That sounds quite cool.

Does anyone know about the features / functions of the alarm?

Yeah I got a quote. Now when I tell you this you\'d better be sitting down.

I\'m 21 so obviously it\'s gonna be expensive. To give you an idea I\'m paying £412 Fully Comp at the moment on a Modified \'97 Twin Point Cooper, including law club and European RAC cover.

I think they messed up the quote a bit because they don\'t have the Works on their computer yet so I think they put it down as a modified car which it isn\'t, it\'s a standard model.

Anyway they wanted £1100 on top of what I\'m already paying. I guess it probably isn\'t that bad considering my car is gonna cost me the wrong side of £17,000 with all the extras and the performance of the car. I\'m gonna try and get a proper quote nearer the time.

Has it got a tilt sensor?

Try jacking the car up with the alarm on to see if it goes off.

If you would like to see what the red light for the alarm looks like, check out LOL\'s pic of the leather sports seats. It can be seen on the stalk

Looks well cool

If you want to check for a motion detector, something I have seen done before, is to kick the front wheel side-on to rock the car....
You\'ll soon know if a shock/motion detector is fitted!

MINI Alarm

What sort of chirps does it make?

I have an Alarm and it\'s silent on arming/disarming so I presume it\'s an option if you want it to chirp or not?

Is it a \'blip blip\' (Clifford) or a \'beeeeep\'? (Quantum)

Cheers,

Jon E

In Switzerland we get a discount for the immobilizer (As in my wife\'s Honda Stream) AND for the having an alarm.

Great about the functions and the light, shame they dropped the little green light as that was on my old Cooper S. Anybody going to do that as an extra??
