Offline | iPaq/Sat-Nav I've noticed you can now pick up the iPaq Navigation System (inc. GPS receiver/jacket, windscreen suction mount, cigerette lighter adaptor, and software etc.) for £235 new. So, I'm considering getting sat-nav. I've also been considering getting a Pocket PC for a while, so maybe now is the time to buy, and combine the two! The only thing is, the iPAQ N.S. is only compatible with 3xxx series iPAQs. Which have been discontinued! There are a couple on eBay, but I don't really like buying on eBay! Of particular interested is the 3970, which was the newest one and also has bluetooth; since I have a Mac the bluetooth would also be good to transfer files across, with iPAQs and Macs over USB not being particularly friendly! ![]() So, I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of where to look for a 3970? I really want the 1910, which is the entry-level, cheap one. I don't need any more from a PDA. It's also much smaller than the 3970. But, sadly, it doesn't support the jackets and as such I won't be able to get sat-nav on it! So that's a no go ![]() Anyone any ideas of where to pick up a decent second-hand (or anywhere who still has some old stock left over) 3970 for a good price?? ![]() Regards, Mark |

Offline | Mark, Just be careful of the 'jacket' systems for the pocket PC - beacuse the mini screen is so highly raked, it can be difficult to site it so it can get a good lock on the satelites. I opted for Tomtom in the end as you can site the reciever pretty much anywhere. ![]() |

Offline | Thanks for the info guys! Don't really want a GPS "mouse" stuck in my car though... Just want to leave the little bracket on the windscreen and slot in the jacket when I need to use sat-nav. No cables or anything then unless I need them. I'm going to get a 2nd hand iPAQ 3970 I think (discontinued, but the only ones compatible with the Navman/iPAQ N.S. etc. now are like £400-£500!!), and get the iPAQ N.S. and test it to see how well it works. I need a PDA anyway! ![]() |

Offline | I have an Ipaq 5450, Navman 3450 sleve, 256mb CF card, Flexi windscreen mount and Smart ST pro software for sale. No box for the Ipaq, but all original CD's etc. £500 for the lot. The only problem with the 5450 is that the speaker is smaller than the 39 series and therefore it is not as loud for the spoken instructions. I have used it in my Mini without problems. |

Offline | Try researching on http://www.pocketgps.co.uk on reviews of different systems available. I bought mine (H3970 + Navman GPS 3400) over eBay from seller in the UK, did my research and paid by cheque last year. I have since recommended another person to buy from him. No issue with the transaction whatsoever. I am happy with my iPaq/Navman set up, like all systems, it has pros and cons. However, I am aware of its limitations now, and it proved to be invaluable during our last trip in Europe in Jun 2003. I'll send you the details of the company where I got mine via PM if you are interested, let me know ![]() DK :apple: |

Offline | Sooty: will research the 5450 tonight. I'm also in Yorkshire (Leeds) so the transaction won't be a problem...could I maybe see it working in my MINI before I buy? Is everything in good nick with all original cables etc? Have you got the cig lighter adaptor for the system? And does the whole jacket come off the windscreen mount, leaving just the small bracket/sucker? Come with all detailed UK maps?? Will have a good think about it mate :-) Any chance of some pics, both in your car and on its own?? dcfkan: would also really appreciate details of the company mate. Going to look at every...avenue! ![]() |

Offline | MarkW19:- All kit is in good working order. The Navman sleeve is about 2 months old, the 5450 is about 4 months old. Smart ST Pro is the full UK map software shipped with the Navman sleeve. I might be able to sort you out with TomTom software which in my opinion is a better option as you can intergrate speed cam POI's etc. I have the cig lighter adapter, in fact I've got a whole host of cables, Ipaqs, sleves etc that I have accumulated. I have a bit of a fetish for gadgets!!! I've got a couple of older 3970's and various mounting brackets for the Mini as well, which may be for sale. I have not had the Navman setup in my Mini, I had the 5450, Tom Tom with seperate GPS mounted on a Brodit cradle in my Mini (See pic 1, I know its a 3970 in the pic, but its the only pic I had to hand) I had the Navman in my other car. I recently replaced the Mini Ipaq setup with a Clarion head unit / nav and hands free kit (See pic 2) I will take some pics of the actual kit an post here tomorrow The only thing with the 5450 is its a bit quiet. I had the option of putting Ipaq sound through Aux input on boost head unit if it was noisy. I think I also have an aux adapter for boost head unit somewhere. No probs seeing it working. Im about 25 miles from Leeds Sooty Last edited by Sooty : Sep 30th, 2003 at 11:05 PM. |

| MINI2 Regular | I use a navman 3450 jacket with 3970 iPaq. It's mounted on a "downtube gooseneck" which puts the top of the antenna level with the l/h centre dash air vent............and is PERFECT !! Very quick TTFF, with good hot and cold lock, and as a general rule, never less than 5 satelites GO FOR IT !!By the way, I bought the jacket "new" from the USA thru' Ebay. MUCH cheaper than here in the UK, but loaded it with UK maps from TomTom. P.S.Anyone want new Navman Eastern & Western USA maps, PM me ![]() Dave |

Offline | Just found an Arkon sound feeder in my workshop. This allows you to play the Ipaq sound via FM through your car radio. To be honest I cant do with the voice prompts all the time. I only use them when in a strange area. |
