Question Advice

I am SERIOUSLY considering getting the MCS in that awesome gold color, indeed, my mind is made up but I need to wait untill the first of the year so that I can cash out some investments and buy it outright (and not have to worry about the capitol gains tax untill the following year.

I have an interior question for all you mini owners. Would it be possible to source the dual gauge housing for the tach and speedometer WITHOUT getting the DVD navigation system? I love the look of the gauges side by side and IMHO that is the way it really should be. I just can't get used to the weirdness of having the speedo mounted in the center (I don't care if its "traditional"). I also can't see paying $1,700 for the nav system. Yes, its cool and fun to play with but whopti F'in doo. I'm far more interested in what's hapening under the hood (and $1,700 buys a lot of go-fast stuff)

Anyway, are individual parts hard to come by from the dealer?

A little background: I'm jumping ship from a long time Honda obsession because my pride and joy, a hand built (by me) 250 WHP 93 supercharged Civic hatchback was just stolen and no doubt completely violated. The new Mini is the ONLY car that even comes close in terms of fun factor (although I'm really going to miss the supercharged 1.8 liter Honda engine that I had). I'm going to miss Hondas in general truth be told, parts for ANYTHING were so easy to come by, but the new Civic or RSX just don't get me hard from a design perspective.

However, I find that I just cant take my eyes off the new Mini. Its such a jewel of a car.

I'll just have to get over the fact that the engine is made by Chrysler

Soon to be Mini nut

Welcome to MINI2. Parts are very easy to come by from a dealer, so that wouldn't be a problem, though they can be expensive. Think BMW prices, not Chevy prices, though some dealers sell at a discount. The question is more of a technical one (basically will the electronics of a non-Nav MINI recognize the dual pod.

Its currently being discussed on this thread: http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43704 but as you'll see no firm conclusions are around.

Most of us got used to this weirdness in about a week. You only think its odd when you're test driving the car. And if you get used to it, you can spend the few hundred (which is what I'm sure it'd cost for the parts for the dual pod, even if you got them from a salvage yard) on go-fast stuff if you want.

The Cooper S is not available in that awsome gold colour I'm afraid.

Red/Black R56 Cooper Stripes, CHILLI, ASC+T, MINI HiFi, Piano Black Dash, Red Colour Line, Heated Mirrors/Jets, Spare Wheel, Smoker Pack!

Hmmmm. Thats a real bummer. Not a deal breaker per-se as I really love the gray metalic color as well but that gold sure is pretty

Any rummors that it will ever be offered on the MCS?

More likely it will be cancelled and replaced. Its pretty close to the least popular color at the moment, I guess the world doesn't agree with you.

But anything's possible.

Are you sure it's the least popular color? If you're going by the statistics from this site, it would be misleading since the color has only been available a relatively short time. For any accuracy, you'd need statistics from non-S's ordered after something like June, 2003.

That's why I said it was close to least. I'm not sure where it fits on the exact scale, but combining many things: people who post pictures of their new cars on here, the colors I've seen running around the country, the cars sitting on dealer lots (most people have only seen gold at a dealer which means either they can't sell it, or its a demo) and finally, most people's opinions of the color in threads. Its not entirely accurate, but its good enough to make approximate intervals of 'least popular' 'sorta popular' and 'really popular'

It may not be the least popular, but its certainly no Chili Red or Dark Silver, the two most popular.

Ok, so how much is the dual gauge pod?

I think some parts are reasonably priced, like the wheel arches and chrome strips. But other stuff seems a bit excessive. I broke the battery box covery, and it was like $15 to replace. Its a 2 piece injection molded piece of plastic. $15 seems rather excessive.

Fortunately other stuff, like the tire valve caps are quite cheap.

I wasn't really complaining just giving a little warning

I'm surprised that the gold color isn't more popular. I thought is was one of the 'trendy' colors seeing as how so many manufacturers offer it (Ford, Honda, & Nissan to name a few)

No one said herding was good, especially around here

Anyway, Gold is trendy, as is Orange, which MINI is putting on the convertible next summer. Even though some would consider a MINI a trendy car, I guess its owners don't usually follow trendy colors, its probably more of an indication that we're not as trendy as the newspapers like to think, its more about the car then being cool.

Also, unlike most other cars, 85% of US MINIs are made to order, so people chose the color they want. The rest of the buying public chooses cars off the lot, so they're both 'stuck' with getting the options + price they want first and color second, and people are much less likely to be trendy with a color they haven't really seen. Its like worrying about what a wall will look like when you're at the paint store looking at a small sample, you just say eh, I'll be conservative so I don't regret it.

I do like that gold. If it were available on the MCS, that would have been the color I chose, although I would have gone with a black top.

Hey, I never said I disliked Gold, I just said it wasn't very popular. And I haven't stated my opinion on Orange either.

Personally, I really haven't decided if I like either of them, I'll admit to being rather conservative with color, but I'd especially like to see orange in person. (Phone companies in the US aren't orange, not much is actually orange besides orange juice) I saw gold already a few times.
