Radio Wave cassete player problem

Hello all,

I have this problem with my MC Radio Wave. When i put a cassete on, the volume is not stable. For 5 seconds it's loud and the next five it's low. I went to the dealer today to change the whole unit. We tried my cassetes on four different MCs and there was the same problem. I know that my cassetes are a little old, but do i have to play specific types of cassetes in order to listen to my music? I mean it is kind of silly to play only few types of cassetes. Anyone with the same problem?

No problem with using cassetes in my Radio Wave, all have played fine at a constant volume. Sounds like it could be your cassetes if the problem has shown up using the same cassete on a number of MCs.

Does the dealer have any demo cassetes of their own. If that works on the showroom cars and on yours, problem is your cassetes, if not problem is with the cassete units.

Ummm... I think I had exactly the same problem, not with WAVE too... Try your cassettes in a hi-fi and see if they do it on that too.
I came to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that somewhere in the dash area there is some kind of magnetic field (I kept my tapes in the glovebox) that actually damaged the recording on the tape.
It happened to a couple of tapes I'd made up into compilations and I had to re-record them from scratch.

Yessss, that's the actual problem!!! I also kept my cassetes in the glovebox, and all my cassetes were ruined! What on earth is in there??? Should i worry for other devices that i put there as well (like my digital camera)?

would like to hear BMW/MINI response to this. if theres something in the dash issueing a magnetic field, im sure that theres gotta be some regulations on it. think of the risk for people wearing pacemakers etc.... i will try this theory with a few cassettes overnight in my car... answers tommorow...

Please let my know if BMW gives an explanation to this "magnetic field" issue. I had 10 cassettes in the glove box and every single one of them was destroyed. What about the 2001 and 2002 mini whithout the glove box? Do they have the same problem? If there is such a problem, BMW should inform their customers, at least in the manual.

I've kept cassettes in the glove box without problems, but I have the insertable divider, and
keep 2 or 3 in the upper left bin. Maybe I'll get a compass or stud finder out and see
where there might be a problem in the glove box. If it's an ac field, though, that
won't help.
I have the u.s.(boost in uk) cassette.

Do you all have the box provided by MINI, which contains the manual of the car, and sound system? Yes, right, this box closes with a magnet, so maybe this causes the magnetic field in the glove box. What do you think?

That's certainly a possibilty. Can't remeber if I had the book pack in my glove box for any length of time to be honest, although it was in there for some of the time I had my last MINI,

I keep a cassete in the glovebox for 3 weeks now and seems that it sounds good. The diferrence is that i have put the book pack in a way that the magnet is on the bottom of the glove box. I had it the opposite way till now. That's about it

Your 'damaged' recordings could be due to cold weather. If magnetic media is stored at low temperatures, the polarization of the magnetic particles can change - effectivley reducing/altering the recorded signal.

This could be a possibillity but i don't think that its my case here, because the time that happened the weather was really really hot. Thanx anyway for your thought.

I've had the same problem with cassettes i recorded. I kept the cassettes in the glove compartment.

After a few months, when i went to play one, the sound seemed to jump from high to low in a patterned way.

Good to know i'm not alone.

There was cold weather at the time, but i've kept cassettes for longer in other cars in colder weather, so i'm not convinced that is the problem.

Just for the record, i called the dealer today. They told me that i should change my cassetes and buy new improved ones. They denied anything that has to do with magnetic field in the glove box.
