GPS Mice and their position

Hi,

I've just been looking through a few sites and threads and although GPS Mice are supposed to be fitted in line of site of the sattelites, there seems to be configurations that work that dont rely on this!?

Looking at some Mini Traffic Pro fitting instructions at:

http://www.mundomini.com/instructivo...or%20Boost.pdf

They seem to take the top of the dash off, and place the GPS receiver under it.

Does anyone know what they hard and fast rules are here?

Thanks.

I didnt fancy taking the dash apart on mine
I`ve got mine on top of Dash with the cable tucked down beneath the trim, Never had any probs with getting a sat fix.
Ive seen others with the GPS mouse mounted under the "Pollen Vents" just in front of the Windscreen, which is good for an "almost invisible" setup or if you`ve got a heated screen which would otherwise block the Signal.

I have my tomtom mouse similar to Restyles, but mine is in the extreme right corner so it is hidden by the ipaq mounted form the screen.

I get fast fixes from both cold and warm starts, plus it doesn't slip around (restyle - i had mine mounted like yours originally but in hot weather (and quick corners) the sucker would detach and send the mouse spinning across the dash )

To answer the original question it does seem some systems will still work without LOS, however I think it's a case of try it and see - I'm not sure if the satellite signals can penetrate plastic/metal. I certainly lose my lock when I go through dense woodland (and cities).

Thanks guys, this is what I thought, just cant understand on why some will work, GPS at the end of the day is GPS.

Restyle, surely mounting this in the pollen vents will make the mouse have quite a few wet journeys, or is there some sort of cover here?

Just thought the whole thing if hidden from view (and works) would look rather smart.

Yes but I believe they are designed to be Waterproof, But to be sure, there is No reason why it cant be sealed within a plastic bag under the Vent.

I had my Destinator GPS receiver all over the place in the car, and had mixed results. Under the dash pad near the passenger side airbag did not work well. Sometimes took 10 minutes for sat lock and the signals were always weak. Moving it over towards the driver's side helped, but was still unacceptable. I then put it on top of the dash and hid the wires between the dash and the windshield. Worked very well, but I didn't like seeing it on top of the dash. It was mounted with 3M acrylic double-sided tape - it didn't move and it wasn't too hard to remove. I suspect that if it was allowed to sit there over time it would get much harder to remove and would probably leave marks from the adhesive.

My favorite place was in the corner on the underside of the glass of the rear sunroof. Held in place (again) with the 3M double-sided tape. The tape was black, as was the receiver, so it didn't stand out (never noticed it when in the car, difficult to see from the outside). Biggest problem at that point was extending and routing the cable down to the iPAQ. Unfortunately, I only had it this way for a short time and I didn't take any pictures (the receiver died and I replaced it with a Socket Bluetooth GPS receiver).

Remove dash end panel, get your hand in and hide aerial inside top of dash.
It just clips off easy
