ipod aux full of static/noise! help!

hello friends,

thanks to all the great help and tutorials from this site, i was able to install the aux input and hook up my ipod to my mini stereo. however, once i plug in my ipod (using a belkin auto charger and a male-male cord from radio shack) there is unbearable static and noise! it is almost as loud as the music itself!

i have set the AUX level to zero, and it is still very noisy. obviously, setting it higher makes the noise even louder.

did anybody have the same problem? any solutions? do i need to buy a better male-male cord (i bought the cheapest one)? does the car charger adapter cause the static? is my navigation system problematic?

thanks!

male to male cord? using the AUX input? static is produced, i recall something about using a ground cable to reduce the feedback?

i used a tape adaptor and male cable. i do get humming but i turn the volume of the ipod upto 100% volume and turn the HU volume down.

was this the MINI official AUX jack, or did you make it yourself? If it's a homemade job, I've heard you need a ground loop isolator. If it's the official MINI one, you shouldn't need it.

If you plug the aux input into the ipod (at the top port) and plug the belkin into the bottom you won't get static. I know it's a pain having to plug both into the ipod but if the static is annoying enough it's worth it.

I'm thinking a ground loop isolator will be the permanent fix

This solved my problem of having the Head Unit canceling the AUX input completly when connecting power to my PDA. Many different things can happen with ground loops. I used this to fix it

If you plug into the top jack (headphone) you get a vastly different (lower quality) signal than the lineout.....

I have the same setup and it works perfectly. I have the factory Aux jack and a Belkin charger. I run the male to male cable from the Belkin to the Aux jack.

I'm assuming you are using the factory Aux adapter. If it's a home made one...well...

The Belkin charger uses the line out from the bottom of the iPod (at least on the newer units), not the headphone output. The headphone setting does not affect the line out in any way.

Set the gain (the little scroll wheel) on the Belkin to about 1/2 to 2/3 volume, and set the AUX input setting of the Mini Stereo to about 3 or 4. Turning these too high will cause some distortion of the sound.

If you think the male to male cable is the culprit, that's easy enough to swap out with another one. I just used one I had left over from my computer. A bit long, but it works fine and no static at all.

If you think the Belkin could be introducing noise, just run the male to male cable from the iPod headphone jack to the Aux jack as a test.

Having the iPod is a great addition to cruising in my Mini. I just love jammin' to my Charlatans UK playlist.

Hope this helps.
