Map Light

Saw this in the accessories brochure. Anyone getting one?

Looks like it plugs in just behind the shift boot. Is this a permanent location or do you put it there only when in use?

Is it necessary? Is there any overhead lighting that would work instead?

Most fun on 4 wheels.

G'day mate

I was going to get one, until my dealer told me that the "interior light package" includes two "map lights" Beyond that he couldn't "enlighten" me , so I too would be interested in any answers.

The interior map lights are part of the main interior light unit. There is a switch at each end of the unit which turn on lights that point to either the driver or passenger side.

The one in the accessory brochure just plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and is removable. If only it were chrome.. *sigh*

I think the plug in map light is something in the region of £15 but as usual I may be wrong

Mini Map Light Review

I just bought the map light in the Mini catalog while I was at Tate Mini getting my coolant tank changed.

The light is a pretty common European brand, the Osram Copilot M, about ten inches in length. It cost me $25.50 plus tax for a total of $26.78. Checking the web, this seems to be within the range charged by the few non Mini places that stock them. In Germany they seem to go for about 17 Euros, VAT included (?).

You are not paying a premium for the Mini logo, because there is none. Its simply the Oscram unit in an Osram box.

The more common brand in the US for this sort of product is Hella, but I can see why Mini went with Osram, since the Hella model that plugs in to the lighter has only a 7" stalk, while the Osram is more like 10". Given that the lighter is tucked under and forward, 10" is pretty much a minimum length, for use when you don't want to use either of the two directional reading lights that are part of the dome light.

The Mini light does not plug in easily. There is an actual plug, which is snug, and a sleeve that is supposed to cover the plug (and bare metal) once it is in place. Neither I nor my service advisor could get this protective sleeve in. I may try lubing it a bit with dilute dishwashing detergent to see if that helps. If I can't get it in properly I will return it.

Like the plug in Hella, the Osram light does not have a red filter, although the fixed mount Hellas ( which can be longer) do.

If you really want a light available down low, I'd go with a fixed mount Hella, long or short depending, and take advantage of the red lens. You could do the permanent mount of the short Hella and end up with a similar practical arm length as the Mini plug in. Botach has pretty decent prices, though I've never dealt with them.
