Interference problems with mini/s bluetooth installation?

I had the dealer install the hands free bluetooth adapter in my 2005 mini/s, and bought a phone with bluetooth.

everything seems to work really well. The voice interface is excellent, and it makes dialing frequently used number really easy...I love it...but...

People on the other end of the phone are complaining about a lot of noise on the line that seems to make the hands free really irritating to the person on the other end of the line (thought it sounds fine inside the car). This renders the unit virtually unusable, since the person on the other end spends the entire conversation complaining about the noise and begging you to call back on the phone.

if I do call back on the phone directly, the interference seems to disappear. if I call on the bluetooth without the engine running, it also seems to be a lot better (at least one person said so anyway).

Anyone else having this problem? could this be an installation problem? any ideas?

tx.

Where have you had your microphone place? I had mine put behind the little oval grid, where MINI recommend. The noise on the other end was terrible when I was driving. I returned to the dealer who appologised and said that they should have mounted the microphone on a peice of dense foam then into the fixing spot. This isolated the microphone from the vibration from the roof and body. No problem now.

I did notice one thing...when I had the phone in my pocket, it seemed to be much better. the times that it was really bad were when I hopped into the car and dropped the phone into the cup holder... must be proximity to the radio/environmental stack...

I'll do some more experiments when I get back from a trip...

Well, the proximity solution is not solid. yesterday, with the phone in my pocket, I called someone who said the signal sounded clean... a couple of minutes later, after dowshifting, he reported that the interference was back, bad.

I turned off the radio, and the nav system, but it didn't help. I forgot to try turning off the A/C system, but it seemed to be more related to engine rpm.

Can anyone make any suggestions for a root cause?

More data.

Last night, we tried another phone and found it to have the same problem.

we did a little experiment with both phones...

turns out that there is a sphere of interference in the car...as long as the phone is outside a certain range from the dash, it all works fine. the distance is essentially the back of either of the front seats. anything forward of this, and you start to get interference, increasing as you move the phone forward.

can anyone make anything of this?
