MP3 Question

Our new MINI has just been delivered and the dealer told us the CD player would play MP3 files. Sad to say I don't know how to get MP3 files onto a CD! I have a PC CD full of .wma files. Will these convert to MP3 to put onto a CD. I have CD writer on my PC. The purpose is to get as many tracks onto one CD as I can. Can i record ordinary music CD's through the PC and save them as MP3 files on a writable CD - then play them in the Mini?
Thanks.

Yes you can download programs that do this for you, just slap the CD into the CD drive and it auto puts it in MP3 format with the correct tags on.
If you have Nero you will need to go into data and drop the mp3 files there then burn the disk "Not the Music section" where many people get confused. Ill try find the program I use and get back to you.

You could also download Music match Juke box for free, it will burn MP3 CDs directly.

Cheers, Peter

What you need to do is firstly convert the wma which I presume you have made with windows media player. You can do this with what I use (dbpoweramp) it has a separate converter program, which you can use.

There are of course problems that you may encounter, Open media player, and on the menu goto Tools->Options, goto the Copy Music Tab and half way down there is a quality slider and a checkbox named protect content. If the protect content box is checked, then you really need to re rip the albums that you have, this is because protecting basically stops you from listening to the music other than on the computer that it was ripped on.
Also, a good bit rate to record to is 128 (this is really the lowest you should record at), all of my music is cd quality at 196 kbs.

If your music isnt protected then try to convert, Ideally you convert to mp3 at the same bit rate as the wma was recorded at (see the slider), otherwise you are trying to compress compressed music which isnt great for the sound quality.

In any case, re recording albums to the mp3 format at 192 kbs will achieve the best quality results, once done, you can then use a cd burning program to burn these files to a cd.

CDex is an excellent 'CD ripper'. It is also free. This will produce MP3s which can be burnt using any CD burning software

Job done!
Thanks for all your help.
For my first attempt I've burnt 42 tracks onto a CD and the MINI CD player plays them just fine. Now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing I'll just save the audio files as MP3's and not go via wma.
Thanks again.
