Offline | Are you planning to remove the factory head unit and HK amp and keep only the speakers - this may not be a good thing to do. The HK speakers are low impedance (2 ohm) which some head units don't like. There is no crossover in the door to separate the mid/tweeter from the woofer. The wiring to the speakers is from the HK amp, behind the panel in the trunk, but the head unit of course is at the front of the car. Only front left/right are routed from head unit to amp. |

Offline | ... or did you get an "HKenabler" from Mikey? If you are routing the Alpine through the HK amp, you won't get much benefit from trying to tailor the Alpine to the speakers, because of all the manipulation the HK amp does. As above, only front signal is sent to HK amp - it splits that signal into separate front/rear speaker drives. You should leave all speaker filtering flat and send all frequencies out to HK amp, for best result. The only difference is if you are going to install a sub. Then you could cut off the low frequencies going to the HK amp (front speakers) and send them only to the sub(s) ... |

Offline | Excellent. Good to hear - thanks. The HKenabler works by running the HK amp at (nearly) max volume always, so you can vary head unit output to control volume. This means there is some slight "hiss" audible when the sound is at minimum (between tracks). I seem to hear that above the speedo - can't remember what HK mode I use though. The other thing is if you turn the head unit up too high you can overdrive the HK inputs, leading to obvious distortion. But you should be able to get as much or more volume than with the stock HU before that happens. Because the HK amp only takes the front speaker signal, I adjusted the aftermarket head unit fade towards the back so that max volume on the fronts does not distort. Doing this means you are at a higher head unit volume setting for the same speaker volume, which may also help with reducing the bass if you have a good active loudness emphasis on the new HU. |
