depends really if u will use the PDA for anything else, if the answer is no, then get the GO version. thats essentially the only difference i can see.

I recently purchased a tom tom go after much research on the net................it is an excellant piece of kit, well made and simplicity to use if you like that sort of thing, unfortunatly I found out I didn't like that sort of thing! it was distracting in the car and looked awful stuck on the windscreen.............IMO, therefore I sent it back

if I ever decide to get sat nav, I will going for a nice and tidy single DIN unit such as Becker

if you really need portable nav then of all the options I would reccommend the tom tom go

hope this helps

Think I am going to go down the PDA route - seems silly to splash out on the TomTom GO when you could get a PDA that does more than just direct you from A-B...

Does anybody have the new HP rz1710 iPAQ and is it any good?

I am currently looking at either http://www.globalpositioningsystems....id=&t ab=desc or http://www.eurosimm.com/sites/eurosi...de=LDNP-667L3C

Appreciate your help.

I received an email from TomTom this weekend, at least for US customers, Navigator 2004 is out now in the US which now includes the new features of european tomtom3 and the tomtom go..(street names, new interface). So now those features are available on the PDA for US customers as well.

Decided to go for the PDA option in the end. Although the rz1710 does not have a replaceable battery, I should get four or five years out of it - just long enough before it will be time to get a new one!

Went for it through EuroSimm in the end (http://www.eurosimm.com/sites/eurosi...de=LDNP-667L3C) and cost including delivery was £285.00. GlobalPositioningSystems.co.uk have the same bundle but they are out of stock at present.

Can't wait to get the thing now...!!

It does look fab. Actually saw one in Dixons yesterday. Can't believe they are still wanting £449.99 for it! It's so much cheaper on t'inIternet! Or Manchester Airport...!

Two days until the PDA arrives and then I'll never get lost again...!

lol@ stephen hawkins

yeah i downloaded the speed cameras, bp & shell stations, motorway service stations & motor racing circuits from www.pocketgps.co.uk - very easy. i just changed the logo for the bp stations from letters "BP" to the proper logo by saving a new bitmap image to the card. you can free up extra space on the card by deleting all the foreign voices. tried plotting a route & deliberately getting lost this morning - the route turned pink & then it replotted a new route to get me back on track within about 20 seconds - very impressive. i was on some tiny backroads too but it handled it no problem.

did you set up so it gives a warning sound as you approach a camera?

Yeah the guy set the warning sounds up for cameras, will take a look at the above website....cheers.
Have also deliberatly tried getting lost but like you say re-plots a new route straight away, seems to be pretty good - just waiting for it to say S*** you shoulda turned right back there - proceed to handbrake turn and floor it and take the next left
I like the 3D screen as its also good at letting you know where the straights n bends are well in advance (esp good for dark nights on country lanes).

yes if you have a wireless network available and the 1710 has a wireless receiver. However the small screen on the PDA is hopeless for MINI2 . Just search for the network from your PDA, quite simple.

I think you may need a special card to make the rz1710 go wireless. Check out the HP web site here for more info:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en...9-8115657.html

You might want to look at the 3700 series to see if that would suit you better. I guess it depends on what you will use the iPAQ for - I will only probably use it for Sat Nav and a diary, hence why I opted for the rz1710. For an extra £100, could have gone for the TomTom GO, and for a bit more, gone for a different PDA GPS bundle (see Mitac Mio 168).

Try www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk - they are very good, plus you can obtain live buying advice - they really are excellent!

I have been using Tomtom Navigator 3 for a few months Tomtom GO is great but limited. I have a HP Jornada Pocket PC (with built in GSM/GPRS phone) £80 from eBay, brand new Tomtom kit with software and cable £130. Total £210. The best thing about PDA version is you can load CheckPoint on the PDA and get Speed Camera warnings, this updates for free and intergrates with Tomtom. So you save money on GPS speed camera detector (they cost £350 plus and you need to subscribe for downloads). I use a Sound Feeder to transmit voice directions through car stereo radio again this works great and cost just £17.

Hope this helps

Matt,

What limitations have you found in the TomTom Go compared to the TomTom Navigator 3 ?

I'm starting to have second thoughts on this. When I need my PDA it's in the car and
when I go out for a drive it's in the house. TomTom Go having one use and staying in
the car is sounding more attractive by the day. Not sure what I'd do if I was starting
afresh .

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs
