Offline | one of those annoying rattles that dealers can never hear!! Hi there i'm new to the site and new to mini ownership so is there anybody out there who can help me with the following... I get an intermittent rattle from the top of the dash board.. i've got a feb05 minione with all the usual extras (does anybody ever get to buy a vanilla one!!). It seems to me that the top of the dash hasn't been fitted well in the factory. Is it a push and clip job does it come off easily (and go back easily). I've tried taking it back to ALTWOOD MINI (are all mine service places this bad?) and of course they couldn't hear it and as I said before the rattle?squeak is intermittent... |

Offline | I would encourage you to keep on taking it back. My Cooper, March 05 build has exactly the same problem and is going back to the dealership to have a complete new top dash fitted. Hope you get some good news or at least some rattle free driving ![]() |

Offline | Oh no not the dreaded rattles!! They're still a problem on the newer models? That's not good to hear... I have upgraded to a new Cooper S that should arrive in May.... But my current 2003 Cooper makes loads of rattles.... I was hoping they would have sorted this kind of stuff by now?? I really hope my new car doesn't have any of this rattling going on. -j |

Offline | My 2005 MCS had the rattle in the dash just above the Nav system. Downtown Mini took care of it first try, no problems since. When I mentioned it, they seemed to already know what it was. Same for the rattle in the passenger door. I now have a rattle in the back of the car but I haven't ruled out something I have in the trunk area as the cause. Need to remove it and see if the rattle disappears. |

Offline | You are all going to laugh at the following, but I have fought rattles from a couple of weeks after purchase (over a year). I have been successful eliminating the rattles so that now all I hear is the rubber bumpers on the glove box squeaking over rough roads. I bought felt tape like that used by Mini. This can be purchased from the Booth Felt Co. 800-796-2333. I purchased pn .50TP-BK-047 which is .5 in wide for $16.95 inc shipping. I then removed the top of the dash as instructed elsewhere on the mini2 web site -- Remove the two dash side covers and 4 bolts. Lift up on the dash top carefully. You will need to be careful that you don't break the clips on the side covers. I found two wiring harness clips that were detached. Relocated them so that they would secure the harness. Plus I taped the %^&* out of the lip that the dash top slides into along with the faces of the plastic collars around the cooling system vents in the dash top. You may have to experiment some by reinstalling the dash top (don't put the side covers back on until you are satisfied) and driving the car. I also had to put a piece of felt between the passenger side windshield pillar cover on the inside and the windshield. After doing this, that left only the black cover adjacent to the windshield to rattle. I have found no way to get the black cover removed to apply the remedy of felt tape similar to above. Soooo here is the funny part. Get some thick rubber bands and double them over several times. Wedge them between the windshield and the black cover. Place the rubber bands approximately dividing the windshield in 3rds. You may have to experiment with placement and thickness. Watch out or you may push the rubber band down below the cover where it will be found only when you car is scrapped. If you are really picky, you can cut a piece of bicycle inner tube so that the wedge matches the black cover. The combination of these two remedies has made my dash rattle free. SJP ![]() |

Offline | this may or may not be the same as you, but I've got the same consistent rattle coming fron the dash too. It's only intermittent because the dealership can't hear it when i bring it in. I finally got it figured out, and mine was coming from the A-Frame airbag cover. When it rattles, I would put my hand on it and it would stop. The last time I brought it in, they said they couldn't hear it and didn't do anything about it. I need notice greasy hand prints on the a-frame airbag cover. Maybe they did work on it and and refuse to admit it. This is the 3rd time I've asked them to fix it. Last edited by phong13 : Apr 4th, 2005 at 08:16 PM. |
