Offline | I have the auto A/C, but I'd imagine the compressor for either unit would disengage at higher RPMs in order to save the compressor. As you may or may not be aware, the compressor makes use of an electromagnetic clutch to grab the (otherwise neutral) pulley and turn the compressor. There's probably a sensor in the compressor itself that cuts the clutch when revs get too high. I wasn't really paying attention to the air conditioner, but at ~ 125 mph the revs can climb pretty high. Amazingly the ride was still very smooth. Not as much vibration or noise as I would have expected. |

Offline | It could be a number of things. My a/c went on the blink in my 206 GTI - high pitched whining - except that was at all engine speeds. Turned out to be the bearings and the whole unit had to be replaced (which is expensive I can tell you)! Don't want to worry you, but it could be an early sign of a possible future failure. Might be worth speaking to the service guys about it. |

Offline | All a/c units on most cars are designed to cut out at generally more than 85% of the throttle opening. It's to give you the most power when you need it the most. So at very high speed it should cut out. It's normal and not a problem. There is just one moon and one golden sun; And a smile mean friendship to ev'ryone; Through the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide; It's a small world after all. |
