Offline | Cooper Works Conversion - Sum-Up I haven't seen anything real specific as to what the "Works Conversion" actually consists of. Is this a kit availabe from Works that you can have installed on an "S" or Cooper? Or is it a tweaked Cooper that can only be ordered direct from BMW / John Cooper Works? I'm also wondering where the 200hp figure is coming from. That is for the "S" I assume? Thanks for any insight! |

| MINI2 Senior | Well that's just asinine. What's a WRX, $24,500? With 20% more power and 100% more drive wheels (4WD). Yes, less character-- I wouldn't own a boring WRX. But a $27000 MINI is just ludicrous, particularly to underperform relative to any of many cars that cost several thousand less. A new 350Z will start at $26K. With 280hp. This price range includes all manner of crazy performance vehicles like special-model Mustangs and such. I know it's apples and oranges, and that you don't buy a MINI if what you really want is a muscle car; nor do you buy a Mustang if your heart is set on a MINI. But that's fundamental to my point, and the basic truth of the matter: If you're a MINI person, you know better than to pay $27000 for the car, and it's not about performance-- it's about smiles, driving fun, and other such positive subjective factors. If your priority is power and you've got $30,000 to spend after adding the Xenon lamps you want and maybe leather or something, then a 200hp MINI doesn't make any sense or hold a candle to a Mustang or 350Z or Integra or WRX or whatever it is that you like at that price. And, you have to wonder whether that little 1.6L Pentagon 4-banger is going to explode in six years, cranked up to that power. Besides, what in the heck could they possible do to the car to justify a $6000 markup? BETTER BREATHING? A different pulley on the supercharger? Come on. At $3000, these changes are expensive relative to the parts and labor, but perhaps you could justify the cost for the power gained. At $4000, friends (and your spouse) would have to question your judgement. $6000 is just insane. If that made it all-wheel-drive and 200hp, it'd still be expensive relative to a faster WRX, but geez. A Cooper S in America starts at $19,850 right now. At $27,000, that's almost a 50% premium and over $7000 over the sticker. Pounds, dollars, however you slice it, this price has got to be wrong-- or it's just utter, absolute foolishness to consider. Texan. Goofy. Sometimes witty. Pacifist. Imperfect, nice guy. Trying. |

Offline | I would consider getting the works conversion if it's in the £3K price bracket. But once you step into the £4K price bracket your starting to talk silly money. I would never pay that much. ![]() Global Moderator ![]() |

Offline | Eliseboy, I speced mine last saturday, and was assured it would not be above £3500, from both Richard and Mike. I am almost 100% sure it will be some where in the region of £3K -£3.5 Cheers Michael JCW Works S, DS/DS, Chilli, DSC, HAB, HK, panther black/lapis blue (Cloth) S0007 |

Offline | That's too much money period. Even for warranty peace of mind... Save your cash and wait for the aftermarket to catch up. I'm confident that exhaust/chip/pulley will get us to 200bhp no problems Deposit down - no idea when... Currently 2001 GTI 1.8T |

Offline | I guess it depends on what you want. You could just go and get your car chipped and up the HP and invalidate the warranty? On the other hand. I'm happy to pay a little more for a unique car from JCW with its racing heritage and warranty intact. If you think about it, its roughly a 20% ish price increase for 20% power increase. The other good thing is that the car will hold its value better than any aftermarket tuners. Only my thoughts Cheers Michael JCW Works S, DS/DS, Chilli, DSC, HAB, HK, panther black/lapis blue (Cloth) S0007 |
