GP is auto express's 12th best preformance test car

HI All,

Just had a copy of this weeks auto express through the door and they have their 20 greatest drives this year (preformance drives that is) rated inside.

The GP came out 12th

"...was the fastest hot hach - both around the circuit and in a straight line"

nothing else exciting said, picture of it on 3 wheels though

Chris

Yes, please put this in context. Let us know what its up against.

EVO rated the GP as the 5th best front well drive car ever, which i think is probably the most high praise I could ever see it getting....

Not bad for a company who hadn't made a front wheel drive car until 5 years ago either.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Rover 75 some years earlier, quite a fine handling car for a big FWD saloon.

My local shops don't have Auto Express until Thursday...is that correct?

Meanwhile Autocar ran a Britain's Best Handling Car Of The Year feature in this weeks issue.

GP came second to the Ford Focus ST in the Hot Hatches section, first mag to put the ST above the GP I think?

Maybe they just don't like the GP's unavailability being such an industry driven publication? It was the only car they left off the track timings at Oulton Park !

They mentioned it was 4.5 seconds quicker than the Clio 197 so on that basis it did the circuit in 2.07.30 compared to the ST's 2.06.80.

Top six out of 18 cars

1st Cayman S
2nd Exige S
3rd 911 Turbo
4th DB9 Sport
5th 350Z
6th Focus ST

Good point, although that wasn't BMW on their own, but then the MINI project began with Rover too.

then put the clio in number 2 spot........what was there criteria for scoring? are they taking price and conveinience into it? haveing driven the cars in 1,9, 10(well not that exact model) & 11 have to say a golf GTi is mies away from the other 3, and on experiance of handling, comunication from tyres as to what's happening under you would have to put the caterham and exige above the porsche.....ho hum

Do we really care how the popular press rates our MINI ... says smugly turning the key to his GP with a knowing wink!!!!!!

I do think that these publications are industry fueled and dare not upset any of the big manufacturers that give them the opportunity to thrash their cars around the place

The CAR OF THE YEAR awards would be a fine example of this pindi-pandering (I just invented that word)!!!

MINI GP's are history ....... their readers can't buy them new anymore, suddenly the slower Clio and the very capable but soleless ST are to the fore??

Am I being too sceptical........Nah!

I dont mind the 197.....That's pureley based on looks and a spec sheet mind you, Added to the fact an 02 Dynamique was my first car..but now I have A GP so stuff loyalties!...... so i'll just say this........
WTF Are two Chav-mobiles doing above the GP??? (ST/197)
Surely they can't be as good?

Anyway I'll keep in mind what salocin said, I always take those so-called "reviews" with a pinch of salt anyway.

Is it just me or do people think that "works'" cars just aren't taken seriously by the motoring press?.............

I find it hard to beleive that someone with a GP can accuse a Ford ST or Clio 197 of being 'Chav'....

As much as the looks of the GP have grown on me, its still just about the most 'chav' car that you can buy off a manufacturer at the moment....
