Road Noise in the G_P

It's been 5 weeks since I have seen my GP after taking delivery in Monterey; so when we were re-united for the weekend, I took great pleasure in getting behind the wheel. Headed out to Hwy 1 for some "open road" driving, and for the first time experienced an almost-deafening amount of "road noise." Between 60 and 80 mph was the worst. On newly-paved sections (and I mean new, smooth-as-glass rubberized asphalt,) it was fine; but as soon as you were on older asphalt or concrete---grooved or smooth--it was terrible.

I know the GP doesn't have a rear seat, and maybe less sound insulation, but I can't believe the difference between the GP and my 04 MCS with Bridgestone S02 Pole Positions (which are even "louder" than the Yoko's on my wife's MCS).

Is it the runflats, or the lack of sound insulation in the GP?

Has anyone switched to non-runflats and noticed a difference---a quieter car?

Has anyone placed any sound-deadening material in the rear of the GP and improved the sound level?

Would appreciate any information/opinions. Thanks

We've tried 16" runflats but there was no change in sound level. Fuzzy and I are in the JJ camp, we both like the sound of the engine.

Road noise will be down to reduction in sound insulation/deadening inc removal of back seats and also large wheels with run-flat tyres

Sherry, I LOVE the sound of the ENGINE ! But it's the TIRES that are making the noise. Hit a patch of brand new pavement (several on Hwy 1 between Monterey and Santa Cruz) and it's llike night and day. Amazing...............

Oops, sorry Charlie.

I guess the bone rattling potholes on the streets of Norfolk distract us from the tire noise.

We have our share of potholes here too, especially on concrete highways; but the real killers are where they join concrete to asphalt. CalTrans just can't seem to make a smooth joint. There are some really bad ones; and when they're re-paving, the transition between overpasses and asphalt are bone-jarring!

Really? Good!

I think I'll switch to GBMINI tomorrow, for a refresher course in good stereos and quiet tires - we'll see how long I stay away from the "dark side"

(well, Thunder Blue is darker than Chili Red!)

Yes, I am starting to like that Gun Metal Grey.

One reason that I am starting to enjoy it a little bit is that this was the first weekend that it was able to be driven since we got back from Monterey. I may even get around to washing it if it stays out of the shop.
