CONFIRMED wheel campaign/check

Just took a call from my dealer - they have had an advisory notice that GPs should be taken in to have their wheels checked out - early ones may need to have them changed - they have a date stamp somewhere which needs to be looked up - not sure if it's the rims or tyres, but doubt I'll get to see my local dealer for over a week.

Anyone else had a call?

Specifics, if you please

Interesting. No such bulletin or measure in the USA. Call him back and have him send/fax you the detailed report from.

It seems very unlikely that your dealer caller has accurate information if he does not know if it is a wheel issue or a tyre problem.

How could he call you without having the specific information?

There is NO RECALL and please don't start a rumor saying there "might" be. (No offense - )

Demand a copy of this so-called "advisory notice". Please.

Not for me, but the MINI GP Community does need to know!

p.s. I love your roof number!

Hi again - my purchasing dealer is not local to where I live but they know me well enough to flag anything, and they are also well hooked into HQ. I took the call today via mobile whilst driving so was not keen to prolong the conversation at the time, so it was me that didn't ask the qualifying question sufficiently. I don't feel need to demand to see the original bulletin, but will update when I've had chance to call my local servicing dealer. Was just trying to flag to the community the heads up - so no offence taken on the questions back - just because it's the first report, it doesn't have to be false. For sake of argument on naming convention, I will certainly be following through on this "check" - I do have faith in the garages I choose and have never had a negative experience service side.

If there is something wrong....I hope it's the tires, that'll give me an excuse to drive it like I stole it, then MINI can change the worn out ones for a brand new set! fun fun fun.

It would be great if they've realized how bad the stock tires work. In the rain on twisty backroads it is downright scary!

Just wait till they have about 18K miles on them!!!!! I darned near killed myself twice before I changed out the run flats to some Goodyear Eagles! Scary, indeed!! I dare say the GP my husband just got isn't gonna be any better. Run Flats are just BBBBbbbaaaaaaddddddd! (and I don't mean that in a good way, either).

So I managed to grab an hour and get down to the dealers. I don't have an ID for you, but there is a confirmed campaign/bulletin covering checks required on the wheels.

Basically, any manufactured before April need to be replaced under warranty. When on the ramps, on the inside of one of the spokes you will see an 06, but then a number of dots. If you have 3 dots, it means March and it will need replacing. If 4 or more small dots, then this indicated April onwards etc. The description said something about spirited driving could cause damage to the spokes. Hope that gives the doubters a little more to go on.

Very interesting!....will have to have a look-see, then. Thanks for the follow up!

Don't happen to have a "Service Bulletin" date or reference number, do you?
Thanks

There is nothing to worry about with this, as it is a 'Quality Enhancement' (not a safety issue) rather than a Recall (safety issue)

Basically, there is the possibility of of the lacquer bubbling or peeling on affected alloys, which will replaced under warranty.

Owners of ALL affected cars will be/have been contacted by the supplying dealer, so there is no need for any owners to start worrying and calling their dealer!

EDIT: Since first posting this, it has been announced by MINI that the possibility exists of affected wheels cracking under extreme driving conditions. They have still not issued a recall, so I believe it is still noting to worry about.

Still a lot of wheels though!

Just out of interest; do you know what will happen to all the Wheels they replace?

It's never even occurred to me to ask before!

I suppose they could be refurbished and offered to dealers or alloy wheel shops, but it is more likely they will be returned to the manufacturer where they will be melted down and the alloy re-used.

Why, you after a cheap set of 'spares' for yours?

That'll be a shame; seems like such a waste!

Nah; I was just thinking if I could get 'one' cheaply, I could hang it up on the wall of my Garage (when I have one ) or If I win £100m tonight I can commission someone to turn it into a coffee table (like with the F1 wheels) or a clock for the new House i'll be buying , either way It'll be something nice to remembr the GP by, if I ever come to sell it.

'spares' lol; don't give them any ideas....

Doesn't affect me, my GP isn't touching the ground long enough to cause me any problem!

Being airborne saves tyre wear too of course!
