GP oil chang at 1,250 miles

What's the vote on this I wonder?

I'm doing mine but I'm not sure if there is a need to change out that oil filter too.

I would guess that it depends on how long you are planning on keeping the car for. If you are planning on keeping it long term, then definitely swap the oil at the end of the running in / break in period and change the filter at the same time. The oil AND the filter (and the remaining oil that is only accessable by changing the filter) are all likely to be carrying a load of microscopic debris from the running in process and this is your best opportunity to clear it all out. Either that or you can leave it contaminated for the next 8,500 miles.

No choice really.

Tigger.

i'm going to be changing the oil and filter on my GP at the ~1250 mile mark. Since this is a car I will be keeping for a long time the 70 bucks or so seems worth it to me.

This used to be very hotly debated.
I did mine early and at 41K it hasn't been an issue.

Australia

I took my JCW Mcs into the dealers for an oil change when we had completed the run in period. I spent some time talking to the Service manager about this issue especially as the mini uses a synthetic oil. I decided that as we want this car to last us many years early oil changes can do no harm. Remembering that the wife drives the car to and from work once a day for a total round trip of 15kms. The build up of water and acids in the oil under these conditions is higher than if the trip was longer and the engine had a chance to warm up completely. Also any minute particles left behind from the casting / machining process need to be removed from the system. I also told them not to reset the engine computer so our first service will occur at the 15000kms as per the service manual.

Yeah, but did you check it through a microscope? You can't see microscopic debris with the nekkid eye. (We say nekkid in Texas)! MINI Papa will be changin' his after the breakin period of his GP. He has a whopping 250 mi so far.

Sorry can't agree if modern engineering and oil technology can't cope its a poor do! Mine will be changed as per the service indicator and not before!

Done 5000 miles now and love it, also drive everywhere like i stole it and no problems at all!

Here we go, again

This has been hotly debated previously, but I will again give one of my opinions.

I am changing the oil AND the filter - I would not only change the oil alone, as the dirty oil stays in the filter - BEFORE I take the new car home from the dealership.

This removes the assembly lube and assorted debris from assembly before it gets a good chance to contaminate anything.

Oil and filter inspection is a valid and worthwhile procedure to determine wear and need of changing.
