GP/JCW Exhaust - Anyone Had Problems?

Bit of a strange one this - Last week the GP exhaust starts blowing - just started while driving home the one night and keeps getting louder during the journey, then I start getting a knocking noise under acceleration/braking.

Immediatley start getting worried - have I bottomed it out on something and caught it??? is something loose???

Take a good look underneath and can find nothing so get it booked into the dealers - they get it up on the ramps and after half an hour come back with the verdict....

Clean as a whistle underneath, no scrapes or knocks so its nothing I have done, on closer inspection the brackets on the exhaust mid section have rusted through on the welds and holed the exhaust. They are not happy with some of the other welds either. (On an 8 month old car never had this happen before!)

So while the cars in for its service on Tuesday they are replacing the whole system from the downpipe back under warranty. Downside is they cannot do anything about the noise until then as the exhaust is going to be sent back for examination and they cannot touch it...... so currently driving a very brappy GP!!! (Other than this more than pleased with the service im getting )

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem?

Its a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team.....

I had a similar problem with the exhaust on my S Works - after about 9 months, I was driving along and thought it started to sound quite meaty then it got really loud, and I realised that it was actually blowing the central bracket had come loose and a hole had appeared where it is welded to the exhaust - got it fixed under warranty and was fine again after that

I had the same problem fixed about a month ago on my wifes JCW MCS.
The centre support bracket had broken the weld and then slowly tore a hole in the exhaust. Once it had completely torn away, it had the knocking noise of the bracket banging against the exhaust. I patched the exhaust up while waiting for the dealer to get a new exhaust from Germany.
Then while on a run with a few friends I hit a large hump going onto a bridge and it completely tore the other side of the bracket out.
Everybody had a good laugh at the noise the car was making - I was just embarrased!!!
Each time I stopped at a set of lights, I had to turn the engine off because it sounded so bad.
Had the new exhaust fitted and the service guy told me the welds on the new exhaust were much better/bigger that the one they took off.

Just had the centre box replaced on my MCS JCW. Apparently the internals had fallen apart! Mines an 05 plate with 15k miles on the clock. (Turns out that wasn't causing the knocking noise I had though, and sure enough she's back at the dealers for new engine mounts)

Interesting this, the cost to replace the exhaust under warranty was around £1200 acording to the paperwork that was with the service report...... Just bought a complete sports exhaust for my classic for £120 including manifold........

Its a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team.....

Think this confirms what a rip off it is when getting work done at the dealership...exhaust £1200, new clutch £900, £100 an hour labour charge...is it me or are these prices just getting ridiculous?? ...... Glad its getting sorted though...and thank god for warranty...mines just run out

I think you will find the cause of the exhaust failures is due to the fore/aft movement of the engine in its mounts , the higher the power -the more the movement ,the more stress is placed on the on the exhaust and its mounts.
The weaker the engine mounts get ,the more engine movement............
Also I think the GP exhaust is not exactly the same length as the cooper s system something like 1/4" different and this may also not help.
£1200 seems a bit harsh for a steel exhaust, which suffer from loose baffles, and have a flattened section ??? half way along them IMHO
