Question Simple Mini GP Speaker Upgrade

Hi Guys,

Tried to search for speaker upgrades for the Mini GP and have looked through NewMiniStuff.co.uk. Was looking for some help.

The standard speakers are a bit tinny in the Mini...can anyone recommend a nice clean and tidy upgrade speaker package for the GP? I believe it will only be the front speakers that are changed as there are no rear speakers...please correct me if i'm wrong. I'm not too keen on installing an amplifier....just want to upgrade whilst keeping the car pretty much standard.

I found this on NewMiniStuff: Front speakers Clarion 300 watt 16.5cm package, but it was under the Mini 2001-2006 section rather than the GP section. Does that mean it wont fit in a GP?

Hope someone can help.

To keep it simple, any changes you make to the speakers alone on the GP won't be massive, but might be noticable. I decided to upgrade the front speakers with the favourably reviewed SPL Dynamics 16.5cm components (around £80) and bought the excellent speaker rings from newministuff. Even though the speakers are larger and have now been worn in, the bass isn't as deep as the originals - although not far off. I think this is more to do with the standard GP headunit being better suited to the smaller original speakers. Having said that, the clarity and stereo imaging of the new speakers is quite a lot better. If I had to comment on whether it was worth the money, I'd say not quite, but with a headunit upgrade (perhaps a Becker or something OEM looking) I think you'd see much larger improvements.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Exactly what i wanted to hear and makes sense.

I guess the only real way to improve significantly is to include an amp but unsure if i want to start cutting into floors and adding all sorts of extra wiring.

to be honest, all you really need is a nice good quality set of components up front. There are some nice Alpines avaialble in the 100-150 mark that are included in Alpines custom fit range. Then couple that with an aftermarket Alpine headunit with a Bass engine and you can have very nice sound quality that you would not believe was just one pair of speakers.

You don't always need 100 speakers ina car to get a very nice sound ( assuming you are more of an audiophile than a bass head)

Hi there

I had the same thoughts about the standard mini speakers and decided to go for the whole speaker upgrade at NEWMINISTUFF.

Clarion 16.5cm front speakers that you mention and the 350W Kenwood amp and under-seat clarion subwoofer.

The difference is immense and i feel well worth the outlay. The units that were cut into the carpet were beautifully fitted by the guys at Newministuff.

If you arent too worried by the real low end bass supplied by the sub then you could leave it out as when the sub is turned right down (basically off) the front speakers on their own are still outstanding.

I had a Mini cooper S with the harman kardon kit in the past and this setup in my GP is as good as that if not better but of course without rear speakers.

I would give Mikey the Mini a ring at Newmini as you will find him very helpful if you are still stuck on what to do (he has also posted pictures of the work he did on my GP elsewhere on the site)
