| MINI2 Newbie | 55 Plate Cooper Works Info Required Hi, Am about to aquire a 55 plate Cooper with a red "Works" Badge on the back. The car was originally bought by John Cooper Works Littlehampton, so I assume they would have modified it in some way. The Exhaust is not the standard Cooper Chrome one, but seems cut off at a 45 degree angle. Does anyone have any idea what modifications this car may have had? Any members who might have had work done to their cars may be able to enlighten me as to what tuning "packages" and bhp increases JCW may have offered in 2005. Thanks in advance! |

| Mini Madness | It is likely to have the JCW 'sound kit' not the full blown Cooper Works kit that they offered on earlier Coopers. Probably one of their courtesy/test cars - is it hyper blue with a black roof by any chance? Chris ![]() 2007 Clubman Cooper D ~ 2004 Cooper S JCW |

| MINI2 Newbie | Thanks for the reply. It is an 05 model, Cool Blue with a Blue Roof. What was a "sound kit" and approx cost and did it actually boost performance or was it similar to the just really loud old skool "cherry bomb" exhausts from circa 1980? I just wondered if anything was done to the engine, it had the chrono pack fitted if that leads to any clue. I was wondering if a Mini Cooper with "Works" on it would be more to insure. Some members have reported that after a visit to JCW that their regular Cooper showed up as an "S" on their V5, so something major must have been done! Cheers! |

Offline | I know someone in the BMC has a 55 or 56 plate R53 John Cooper Works Cooper (Its definately not an S) That had the engine mod kit, exhaust etc done by the dealer. (It was their last demo car before they switched to R56's) So there are later Cooper JCW's out there with the full conversion, but after speaking to a couple of people they are meant to be rare especially on the later registrations. Something to do with people opting for the S when they saw the conversion costs on a Cooper...... If its been converted properly there should be the receipts for any upgrade and a conversion certificate, under the bonnet there should be a JCW conversion plate with the Kit number on it which matches the certificate. Its a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team..... |

| Back To My Old Self | Ok by 2005 MINI had stopped offering any JCW upgrades for the Cooper apart from the Sound Kit. They stopped producing the 132 & 122 bhp kits some time ago, and neither of these two kits can be fitted to a post 04 Cooper anyway. So chances are you are looking at a Sound Kit, which includes the following 1) Remap 2) Stainless Steel Cat Back Exhaust 3) New airbox and high performance filter. With a sound pipe that comes out of the box and heads towards the engine compartment bulk head. Flap inside the box opens at around 4000 rpm and the pipe channels the induction noise towards the occupants. Check out the sound clips in the JCW link below. This is the tell tale as the other tuning kits didn't have this. 4) New silver JCW engine cover. 5) New Engine plate (rear left of engine compartment) with sound kit number stamped on it. 6) JCW Badge on rear. 7) Certificate of authenticity. Generally accepted as a mod that enhances the sound and smoothes out some of the flat spots it adds 3-5 bhp. Insurance companies will want a break down of the kit as above (well the exhaust, filter, map) and will insure it as a bhp increase of less than 10%. Not a huge premium increase. Kit retails at between £600-1000 depending on your dealer. Check the engine plate or certificate and if the number starts with a D it is likely a JCW sound kit. Link to JCW sound kit section of MINI site. MINI - John Cooper Works* - MINI Cooper Sound Kit* And the MINI2 Sound kit register (although it hasn't been updated in a while) http://www.mini2.com/forum/mini-coop...-register.html Hope this helps. Even though the car was a JC garages car I can't see that it would have anything other than a kit JCW were offering at the time. Hope this helps. Oh and if you think it may actually be one of the other kits then check out this thread. http://www.mini2.com/forum/mini-coop...-register.html ![]() |

| Back To My Old Self | Is it a hardtop or convertible? You say it's cool blue, which is a convertible colour only. Anyway if it's a hardtop the price may be right for a car sourced through the MINI dealer network, but too high for a private sale, even if top spec. If it's a convertible then the price is probably about right for a private sale. Just my opinion though. MINI's are difficult to price without a full spec. ![]() |
