| The Fast Lane | Taking the JCW over 6000 rpm I was in the Dealers yesterday having my Alcantara JCW Steering wheel fitted and I was chatting to one of the techies. He was telling me that you should regularly take the car over 6000rpm as it is good for the engine!!!!! He said it keeps everything clean and tight. I'm not saying I'm a slow coach driver, but is this statement true? ![]() UNION JACK OWNERS CLUB: GB033 |

Offline | I would certainly agree..............the engine is designed to rev to over 6000rpm and it does it the world of good to get there once in a while. ( on a regular basis ) you also need to know that everything works properly at the top of the rev band, and the engine is there for you when you need her. ps I used to take my golf gti up to the limiter, usually in third, just to make sure she was happy and also that the limiter did actually work !! ( it never did her any harm, and over twenty years later I've still got her ) |

| MINI2 Master | not sure about 6000, but i would agrea with 7000 being good for it......lol Just as a little side story. A mate of mine used to work for FIAT as a techie ( now does supercars) but he used to get little old ladies come in with their punto sporting 1.2's or fiat bravos moaning that they were not running right. It was due tot hem driving everywhere so slowly and coking up. So the cure was, Reset ECU, pour injector cleaner in the tank, and drive the car full bore for about 20 mins, hitting limiter in every gear and hand back to the customer with an hours labour. The grannies used to thank them for it and the engine did too as it was all cleaned out and de coked. so yes caning can be good. as long as warmed up and not long term.thrashing |

Offline | my other half has obtained a 10 year old car which was her moms, it has never been above 3000rpm, also covered about 20miles a month but had 15k on the clock after 10 years. The thing is a nail!! The car looks clean but the idle control valve had it, the engine didn't run smooth and in general it would stall when you stopped. Spent lots of money on it to fix it, now I make sure it goes to its top rpm every so often. On another note, JCW do need to be driven as designed, coking is not a problem through modern fuels, but settlement of particles will occur in the head if you do not open it up this can cause a coke effect though can be easily cleaned. Mine regularly goes up to 7200rpm and loves it. it always sounds nice and runs excellent. I do not race around but I use 3rd to do the motorway join in the morning and evening once warm 1-2-3 lane, good speed, used the high rpm then hit cruse and let it take me to work happy days |

| Dodgey, er, dodgem driver | The revs are there for a reason - Use them ![]() As long as it doesn't sit there all day long whilst hardly moving it does it little harm. With my Nitro RC car - If you have it less than screaming for more than 30 secs, the engine HATES it!! i can only imagine its the same for road engines, just perhaps with different time scales/tolerances ![]() |

| MINI2 Regular | If it weren't supposed to be used it wouldn't be there .... factory rev limiter on the integra was 9200 and i hit that pretty regularly .. god i miss that! My old man used to have a saffy cosworth and drove that very carefully - once in a while id take the car and nail it and see clouds of black smoke out of the back and it would drive so much better. One thing to remember though is not to nail it til the oil temperature is right - not the engine temp. Integra Type R > MkV Golf GTi > Polo Diesel (dont ask!) > 06 Cooper S |

Offline | I have a TUNNED MINI ONE (COOPER MOTORSPORT MAP) as used in the Challange: car dosen't come alive till 4000rpm and is good all the way to 7000rpm often hits the limiter and over the past 2 years has seemed to have got faster, smoother. and i'm sure it will continue to do so. all i would add is to make sure you have the car regularly serviced or checked. as in some posts above you won't be able to run it at 6000 rpm or 7000 rpm for long. without damage. |

| Perfectionist Cooper S | I daily get mine from 1-4/5 gear with each change to 5-6rpm seems to not do any harm but as we well know we cant do this for long before hitting the 60mph limit!!! Seems to help unti you do this on a motorway legally!!! then you realise that it helps but not as much as this!! I then on normall driving let it goe to 3/4 rpm on each gear change I was told my my mechanic brother that the supercharger needs this for it to continue to wind properly - seems that those that cant get to 6rpm should have taken up this methord of the title!! I would tyr it & see what you think & it pritty much gurantee you will notice the differnce & its fun to hear it wind that high!! Enjoy |
