Offline | What Air Filter for R53 JCW Hi. I have a MCS JCW built in Oct 2003. The JCW upgrade only included the engine upgrade work but not the air filter (output is 197bhp not 210bhp). I would like to upgrade the induction and not sure whether to get a JCW air filter or go for an after market system. I've looked at the prices of the aftermarket options but does anyone know the cost of the JCW air filter kit? Anyone got any suggestions on which way to go pls? |

| MINI2 Regular | as far as the jcw air filter kit goes - you can get one on ebay from anything form £150-£250 depending on whether they're used or new. a new one from the states (i've ordered one) cost me £200 incl. p&p +/- £35 vat (althoug i've ordered from these guys before and i didn't get hit for vat) i know roland from gtt had one for sale on ebay - a used one i think. one f the site sponsors is a bmw main dealer so you chould ask him? the aftermarket kits basically are always on throughout the rev range hence you can hear that "induction whine" all the time whereas with the jcw it opens up when you hit 4500rpm. so it's not as loud all the time - i personally prefer this as i don't think you gain that much more in terms of torque/bhp below 4500rpm anyway and it's not worth the additional noise if your car is your daily driver and i'm guessing the top end bhp gains are not that dissimilar between the jcw kits ad aftermarket kits. i have 2 new aftermarket kits for sale if you're interested (£60 for each kit+ p&p)- one's a typhoon kit, one's an apollo kit, i've ordered a jcw kit so am not planning on using either for the reasons outlined above. i'm going to add gt tuning's jcw upgrade to my jcw airbox when it arrives. (£70-£80) it boils down to personal choice. although people say some aftermarket kits are better than others i suspect they're all the same, the distinction being the jcw kicks in only at higher revs. the jcw kit is also less "thirsty" on fuel in comparison to aftermarket ones - something else worth considering - do a search on the forums, there're lots of threads on this. i've probably dissuaded you from buying my kit now! damn! dr. blaze bbr 250 |

Offline | You won't have te 380cc injectors then if your car is the 200bhp version, may be worth getting them as well. The 210 kit has an ecu remap which is available from the dealers but not sure if I would bother with it. I have it on mine at the moment but getting a custom map next week |

Offline | I took the flap out of my Works airbox, which opens at 4kRPM and put an ITG filter from verricho engineering. The ITG filter for £40 made a noticable difference and I've always had the flap out! ![]() |

Offline | Thanks for the replies. Raises a few more questions. What are the differences with 380cc injectors and what do I have installed at the moment? If I wanted to go 380 route who supplies, rough cost and ease of fit? Sayanthan, interested in the airboxes will do a bit of research on what will suit my needs better. I'll PM you on this. You're local too. Would seek advice from anyone on this - Car is not a daily runner and is just for fast road pleasure and track use so thoughts on Typhoon and Apollo kits for this would be much appreciated. Not too worried about additional noise as long as not excessive and I can pass track noise Db tests. Must have the popping though!! ![]() |
