John Cooper Works 'V' Cooper S

I have been thinking of exchanging my Cooper in September for a Cooper S. I totally enjoy my Cooper but want a bit more power. Would you go for the John Cooper Works Convesion on my current Cooper or part-ex for a Cooper S???
If I went for the Cooper S I would want the exact colours and interiors I have now.

Look into how much it costs for the full Works conversion. I think you'll find that it will come out to around the same as the extra you'll pay for an "S" as the Works kit is to expensive in my view!

If your spending that much, order the "S".

I second what R1 said, the John Cooper Works conversion appears to be a most expensive way of gaining a minor performance increase. Get your order in for an s, mind you'll be waiting until next summer! I ordered in Nov and have been quoted June for delivery

I personally like how the jcw achieves their power gains, and it seems like a great reliable means to have a fun car. If you like the car now and don't want to take the huge financial hit from trading it in so quickly, go with the jcw. I've never even seen one in person so don't take my word for it, just my opinion.

If JCW was offered in america, I would get it.

Also I think unlike most aftermarket mods, JCW would ADD to the resale value of your MC rather than detract from it! So in the end it might just end up costing a lot less than other modding routes, just something to think about.

I went to the JCW not to long ago and what did the dealer tell me:

"Get the S, its got 6 gears, more power, keeps TLC for relatively the same price........

........then get the Works upgrade for that!"

Now if the JCW tells me that!

He went on to say works upgrade more for the racing (if my memory serves me right).

I agree, but it is just to expensive!

Maybe it's the JCW name.

I think everyone is missing something, he just wants a bit more power but loves the car he has now.

If he sells his cooper so soon he'll lose a lot of money in the trade (at least as much as the JCW is going to cost). Sure the JCW costs what appears to be a lot of money. But I am almost certain that one would get a decent amount back when selling the vehicle.

Now if I had had finances able to deal with owning a cooper S from the beginning thats what I would have done. But now that I have and love my cooper, if or when I ever decide to mod it, JCW will be my first choice unless something else comes around. It just makes sense.

If you can handle trading in your cooper than do it, but otherwise the JCW kit is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Get An "S"

Go for the "S", you'll never regret it, then go for the Hartge 212 BHP conversion from Birds in Uxbridge, a snip at 1500 quid + vat.

Please don't drag me into the warranty issue quagmire, thanks.

Cooper S all the way...

A standard Cooper only has 115bhp

A Works Cooper has 130bhp......that's only an increase of 15bhp. For £2,500 that's a lot of money for relatively little gain.

A Cooper S on the other hand...

For the £2,900 you pay on top of a standard Cooper you get:
  • Supercharger
  • 6 Speed Gearbox
  • Twin Chrome Exhaust Pipe
  • Leather Steering Wheel/Gearknob
  • White Side Indicators
  • Sports Suspension Plus
  • Sports Seats
  • Sport Front and Rear Bumpers
  • 16"Light Alloy Wheels
  • RunFlats
  • Roof Spoiler in Roof Colour
  • Intercooler
  • Chrome Plated Side Indicator Grilles
  • Chrome Plated Fuel Filler Cap
  • Bonnet Air In take
  • ASC+T
  • Aluminium Look Interior Trim
  • Alarm (Thatcham CAT1)
......plus the cars is and absolute hoot to drive to boot.

You guys/gals act like this is a pre-carpurchase decision. He already has a cooper.

eh whatever, do what you can afford. You CAN'T possibly make a bad decision.

I think if you read the question properly he did ask what to do
I would agree that he cannot make a bad decision though.

The biggest advantage of the JCW route would be that the Cooper is in "stealth" mode - unlike the S with it's modified snout.

Personally I would love to have a very quick/powerful N/A car. It just feels cool to say my car is this quick off regular old mechanics and car know how.

turbo's and superchargers are still cool of course, maybe I'm just being affected by this honda vtec "revolution"...hope not.

I think that maybe you should get yourself one of these vtec's, as your screen name suggests, maybe you would feel more at home in the Honda forum

what does my name have to do with honda? Do you have something against Lotus

and just to share my friends online name is viperseatlotus...just an old joke.

ps. and a honda engine would be a heck of a lot better than the chrysler engine we have now (faster, more economical and more durable - probably). So I wouldn't diss it too much. --and I'm not exactly a fan of honda.

try before u buy

try to find someone who has the JCWorks pkg. I have heard the cooper is quick as S at lower speed (to 40 or so). It is geared lower so acceleration is better at lower speeds. It gets better economy as compression is higher, so it is more efficient. It probably is a little more responsive than the supercharged S. You might find it is a good fit for you. Work the figures, though. If you can sell hi and buy low, the S is a stronger car. - forged crank and rods, oil sprayers under pistons, getrag trans, sport suspension, etc.
