Question Works S - who's upgrading vs buying new?

Interested to here from S owners who are tempted by the Works: are you going to upgrade or trade in for a new car?

My temptation is the former.

I'm interested in the upgrade, but not enough money to do so yet.

I'm buying new for reasons discussed elsewhere. (Easier to get Wifely clearance for the spend).

I will upgrade the question in my mind is whether to go with JCW or Dinan. Both have good backgrounds and both allow the warranty to remain. I know the JCW is a boost to 200 hp, I am planning on waiting to see what Dinan will do, rumor says they will come out mid summer with theirs.

A friend on mine had an early Dinan M3 and a Dinan Z3. Their Mini should be great. How does the warranty work with them, are BMW backing it?

For those that are trading in (an MCS), are you getting a decent price? My suspicion is that there's going to be a glut of MCS's on the market soon and prices will come down accordingly.

If I got one, it would be an upgrade on my current car. Given that this is an aftermarket at-the-dealer add on whether it's on a new car or your current car, I don't see what the advantage/draw would be to ordering a new car and having it put on that, especially with the inevitable depreciation hit of trading in a relatively new car. I know MINIs are holding thier value pretty well, but with a little depreciation, plus the 2002->2003 price increases... Just not worth it to me. If my car was lacking something I wish it had, I might feel different, but the car is optioned just how I want it.

But of course this is all dependent on if I get the JCW, and I'm still decidedly on the fence on that. We all have our own opinions of what it's worth to us, and based on what I've seen and heard, including the announced UK price, the kit is right on the hairy edge of what I'm personally willing to pay for it. Autoweek says it's $4500 with installation, which interests me. A fair number of folks are being told by their dealers that it's $4500 plus installation, which interests me a fair bit less. It really is that much right on the line, a little bit either way would tip me. So where it ends up actually being will determine my interest level...

As for the Dinan-BMW relationship, the fine print is that BMW does NOT warranty or cover Dinan parts. The key is that Dinan "matches" BMW's warranty, they have a special deal set up with BMW so that if a car comes in for warranty work and a Dinan part is found to be the problem, Dinan reimburses BMW, and it's generally transparent to the customer. The catch being that the dealer doing the work has to be a Dinan Authorized dealer, and that not everything Dinan does is covered this way, some of the more extreme kits they offer (i.e. turbo/supercharger kits) do not have this "matching coverage" thing.

All that being said, I know Dinan have said they are working on MINI stuff, but I don't know that it's an automatic slamdunk that their special relationship with BMW will carry over to MINI, given the relationship MINI has already established with John Cooper Works. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, all I'm saying is I don't think it's automatic. I think Dinan dealers are saying it will, but they have a vested interest, don't they...

Even though I have a MCS, I'm tempted to let my wife drive it and order a "stripper" MCS and add the Works kit for about the same price as I paid for the first one.

I am dreaming, but that is the first dangerous step:

JCW MCS pure silver all over. Red interior: buy all the plastic skins for a red interior, get red rear seats, and add red Sparcos. Other options: cold, silver 16" wheels, (never again white!), maybe xenons and fogs.

Dinan?

My dealer is an authorized Dinan BMW dealer and they say a kit is coming, mid summer maybe??? They feel that Dinan is/was waiting to see where the JCW kit comes in as far as out put goes then release theirs. They also say that they expect the ususal support as far as warranty goes, Dinan would pick up the BMW warranty on any of their parts. No word on cost but they expect it to be in area of the JCW kit. It will be a tough decision.
